Police Brutality in Movies
Straight Outta Compton is a movie that came out in 2015. It was directed by Felix Gary Grey. The hegemony in this movie shown was police harassment/brutality. This movie is about young rappers trying to become big in the rap industry while a rough period where discrimination is still occurring. The main characters in this movie are famous rappers which include Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and MC Ren. This was a movie based on real-life experiences these rappers went through in the mid-1980s.
Throughout the movie, there are a lot of police harassment/brutality being shown. One of the first scenes that demonstrate this is when Ice Cube is just going home and a police officer stops him and automatically shoves him to the top of the hood of a cop car. The police officer assumes right away that he is a gang member and discriminate him right on the spot. Another very important scene in the movie is when Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and MC Ren are in the studio recording music and go out for a lunch break. They come back to the studio and police officers immediately grab them and curse at them. They make them get on the ground and also throw their food on the ground. The police officer put their feet on top of them as well. Their manager, Jerry Heller, comes out of the studio building and starts talking trash to the police officers, and tells them that they can't be discriminating and harassing them just because of what they look like. This gets Ice Cube very furious and he instantly writes a song about what just happened to him but also his friends. The guys decide to rap this song at one of their concerts and a riot breaks loose. The members get arrested as well as their manager. The police officers tackle them and throw them violently into a Police truck and take them away.
I believe police brutality/harassment plays a big part in this movie and is the hegemony. This movie was released in 2015 as I had stated before. I think that the rappers finally decided to tell their story because they saw that police brutality is still a very big issue to this day. Many minorities face this issue and sometimes we even have fatalities that shouldn’t have happened.
