Punctuality And Attendance As A Determinant Of The Likelihood Of A Student’S Success

Students’ attendance has been proven to be one of the best indicators in determining the likelihood of success by means of attending lectures promptly. It is difficult for teachers to educate students when most of the class are repeatedly absent. Same as internship, it is burdensome to supervisors when an intern is frequently absent, interns will miss important instruction causing them clueless during the task. Previous studies have examined the correlation between students’ punctuality and academic performance. It is expected that attendance does matter to the overall students’ performance and this reason led some authors to formulate measurements in improving students’ attendance; one measurement was to make attendance mandatory to the students. University graduates benefit from attending their class lectures. Room discussions and class meetings are the main instructions in all undergraduate courses. Unfortunately, student absenteeism had been reported as a major problem faced by most universities.

A study from Sultana (2013), states that conflict of time management is the reason behind the frequent absenteeism of the students in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Siong. Furthermore, it has been examined that self-discipline is important in time management. Such is said to be the foundation of discipline among students that determine the quality of their learning. In addition, teachers may also help students in improving their time management and punctuality issues. It is presumed that when teachers do not utilize their time during discussions, students may lose the desire to learn and finish the lecture. Hence, it is proven that time management in teaching process is significant to improve punctuality issues among students. Similar with school policies, businesses gather data on employees’ absences and tardiness to observe their performance and learn about their population. These behaviors are like barometers to measure the efficiency of employees’ performance. Several employers made innovations to improve employees’ behavior and performance by using punctuality and attendance as an indicator of proficiency.

In general, employees are expected to attend their work every day in timely and regular attendance as an expectation of good performance, leading them to the likelihood of success. To perform good work, the employees must produce high quality output. It is argued that to do so, the employees’ knowledge is not the only factor that could influence the performance but also their working behavior. Positive working behavior manifestations: high attention, dedication on work, punctuality, assertiveness in expressing opinions, goal-oriented and good comprehension skills — which leads to successful performance. On the contrary, employees with negative working behavior possess absenteeism, low work effort, lack of commitment, unproductive & incompetent and unsatisfactory performance.

Punctuality among employees has been neglected and considered irrelevant when evaluating job performance, but it is obvious that late arrival at work results direct and indirect cost on the employer. When a company invest to survive in global market competition, a committed workforce implementation is an advantage reinforcement. One important attitude is punctuality. It will determine the degree of interest that an individual puts into his work which also acts as a motivator for others to do the same.

The university will also experience difficulty in producing quality graduates for future employment; it is the university’s goal to generate competent and skillful graduates to the labor market; graduates will be able to find a job and be an abiding citizen that will help improve the economy development. A study conducted in University Malaysia Sawak (UNIMAS) has shown that they have done much effort to generate good graduates. It has been examined that UNIMAS is one of the outstanding universities that has generated several competent and high-qualified graduates.
