Ray Bradburys’S Warning To Humanity In Fahrenheit 451

In the novel Fahrenheit 451, firemen burn books instead of letting people read them, people in this dystopian society have a technology addiction expressed through a character. The huge wall- screen televisions were as futuristic and implausible as the idea that people on the television would talk to me, that i could take part if I had a script. ” addresses Neil Gaiman in the novel Fahrenheit 451. Ray Bradbury uses his book as a way to let society know this may affect our future by warning us about impending danger of losing books in our society. Bradbury is stating that teenagers are ruining our society as they depend mostly on technology to do daily things.

During the 1950’s televisions became very sought after. Every household either had one or wanted it one. This created a issue during Bradbury’s generation. This is when face to face communication changed to mass communication, as people stopped interacting with each other the cold war also began. Mildred is a good example of teenagers not having social interaction as she interacts with a tv screen more than humans. People were beginning to ignore what was truly happening around them, as in the book. Page 11 says “He felt the star’s had been pulverized by the sound of black jets and that in the morning the earth would be covered with their dust ` like a strange snow. That was his idiot thought as he stood shivering in the dark, and let his lips go on moving and moving. ” The author uses this quote to indicate that in the book citizens are to believe that deep thoughts are wrong and they are not to think a certain way. Televisions became a distraction and inability to do long term thinking. Clarisse from the novel on page 27 says, “I’m afraid of children my own age. They kill each other… six of my friends have been shot in the last year alone. Ten of them don’t like me because I’m afraid. ” The children in the book have no self control because they don’t have the luxury of books to keep them mentally stable due to their addiction to technology. Clarisse is the only one who has her eyes open to the dangers of these teens and she understands that her society is ignorant. Clarisse is afraid of what could happen if books disappear completely every teen is addicted to television, would they lash out based on what they see on their televisions.

In Fahrenheit 451, televisions became prevalent in the 1950’s as way to distract themselves from what was really going on in the real world. On page 18 in the book, it says “How long you figure before we save up and get the fourth wall torn out and a fourth wall- TV put in?” That lets the reader know how addictive and distracting televisions had gotten for Mildred. People use technology so frequently that they may that they may be unaware of the damage that technology addiction is doing to them. People became addicted to technology. Mildred got addicted to the TV and seashells and it ended up causing problems later on. For years now, people have been relying on technology in almost every way possible. Ray Bradbury teaches us that we need to value education. We need to learn from books because in 50 years we will not be taught the value of a book. This will help us think for ourselves and value the knowledge gained. If the issue continues unresolved, then society will be filled with uneducated people who will have no limits to their technology. We need to understand Bradburys’s warning before our world becomes like the dystopian society in the novel.
