Reasoning Why I Want to Be a Clinical Psychologist
“Why I want to be a clinical psychologist?” essay its a collection of my personal statements and experince that help me to define main reason why I want to study clinical psychology at a degree level. Especially since, everyday people are suffering from various psychological illness such as eating disorders, depression, personality disorders, substance abuse. I would like to use my degree to help in the treatment of such vulnerable people and overall improve the superstition that clients don’t receive adequate or helpful treatment. I personally prefer a more hands on job that’s involved in helping clients.
The reason why I chose to do psychology at level 3 because I have always wanted to follow this path and have been excited about learning about it since my height school did not offer this, driven to pursue my interests. During my studying of BTEC psychology course, they are plenty of interesting topics, my favourite one being health psychology. The different treatments and how people can benefit from something of each one, is just captivating as they all have their strengths and weakness. For example, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is very useful when helping treat stress and depression, as it aims to treat both behavioural and cognitive mental disorders. CBT helps clients learn new skills to help themselves battle new situations or thoughts. Mixing CBT with drug treatment also shows to be efficient as well. However, it does rely heavily on the client as it takes time and effort to advance and overcome hardships. I want to help people be happy with themselves and overcomehelp manage mental health issues which is why I want to be a clinical psychologist.
Since, I do criminology, psychology and history, I have knowledge in different formats of writing and can give speeches in-front of audiences. Doing these courses has made me pay more attention to detail, as missing stuff can be crucial to understanding the whole topiclesson. I can research effectively, have great analytic skills, can think critically as well as argue about why I believe in certain ideologies.
At high school, the role of Prefect allowed me to develop my confidence when working with others. To be a prefect you had to be recommended by staff, then do an interview with the head teacher, showcasing my hard work and merit, I am recognised as someone who is a role model to younger students, this reward was because of my good behaviour, hard work and dedication. I was also involved in numerous projects, such as presenting the Diana Award, helping my ability to communicate clearly and effectively to wide audiences. I gained a lot of experience during this project, as it involved working closely with others of different personality types as it helped improve my social skills and increase my knowledge of how to handle difficult situations. Psychology evidently requires a lot of human interaction, which I have no qualms about. I am an avid studier, and my good time management will help me deal with the increased work load which is expected in university.
Outside of my studies, my interest in psychology has ultimately led me to complete Open University online courses on many different interesting topics related to psychology such as ‘exploring anxiety, ‘forensic psychology’, ‘young people’s well-being’. Being an avid fan of crime shows and psychological literature, such as ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘I am a Killer’, I often find myself interested in obscure things as they constantly pique my interest due to their uniqueness. Which is why psychology is so interesting as it links really well with criminology. Remote learning made it so I had more free time available, and I could pursue new interests such as psychopathology. The lockdown lead to the increase of self motivation and allowed me to keep up with work despite the difficulties. I really enjoyed working independently.
I am simply passionate about psychology and look forward into furthering my education by diving deeper into the extensive modules university has to offer. I intend to use this degree to further pursue a career as a clinical psychologist or go into counselling.
