Reasons to Support the Pro Choice Movement
Abortion has always been one of the most controversial topics in today’s society, every person has their own opinions about abortion. There are many questions that surround this topic, does the constitution defend a right to abortion? Does this include confidentiality? Is a fetus a being? Should the law allow abortions for rape or incest? Women should be giving their rights to get an abortion. In this essay I will going over why women should have the rights to get an abortion and why I believe in the pro-choice movement.
Most people are either pro- life or pro- choice. It’s not an easy thing to decide which side to be on. There is a lot of things to consider when deciding which side to go with. People who are opponents of abortion are against abortion. The pro- life group believes that there is no other reason that can be considered moral to abort the fetus except when the reason for abortion is to save the life of the mother. Many factors can influence a person 's reason for being a pro- lifer but personal values and religious beliefs are big contributors. If a person is pro- choice, that means that they believe than only the woman in question has the right to choose what to do with her body and the pregnancy, It is also that the government has no say in the decision the woman makes regarding the pregnancy. “A woman has the right to disconnect herself from the human fetus. And this does not violate the fetus’ rights to life, even if such disconnection ends the fetus’s life” (Kaczor,1). Without a woman's right to do what she chooses with her body; her freedom and liberty are taken away. If for personal reasons, a woman wants an abortion, as is, currently, her constitutional right, she has the freedom to do so. A child needs to be loved and wanted. A baby, whose mother resents his birth, will not receive the proper care and nurturing he deserves. Perhaps, he would be better off not to have been born. For these reasons, I support the pro-choice movement.
Those that are pro-choice have their reasons on siding with abortion; they feel that women have a choice regarding their body, circumstances, and so forth. Some women have the tendency to put their career ahead, vacation, and status or position in society first. Even today, some professions still frown upon women who have other responsibilities such as children. On the other hand, there are women who contemplate on abortion because of ill-timed pregnancies occur at a financially unstable time. Some feel that women that have been sexually abused and raped should have the choice in getting an abortion. They don’t want to go down that emotional rollercoaster, with raising a child that will one day ask about his or her father and the things pertaining to his/her birth making the mother relive the devastating events of the past.
The group of people who are against abortion, also known as the pro- life side of abortion, believe that at the very time of conception a fetus is a human being. They would consider it morally wrong to abort the fetus, seeing it the same as murder of a human outside of the womb. Some even believe that even if a woman was raped/ forced to have sex by incest, or even if the mom was in danger, that aborting the baby is still wrong, despite the circumstances of the woman and the pregnancy. The other side of the abortion debate is pro- life. This side believes that women have every right to decide what to do with her body and her pregnancy. Many people on the pro- life side say that they dislike abortion or unplanned pregnancy, but they support a woman 's right to have access to a safe and legal abortion. Many fear that if abortions were illegal, women would perform what some call back alley abortions, unsafely terminating the pregnancy because she doesn 't have access to a facility to get it done safely because of abortion being illegal.
The reason I believe so strongly about the abortion issue is because sometimes circumstances beyond a woman’s control present themselves. Women who are raped, who carry a disease, who are too young to be mothers, and who are drug addicts should all be able to obtain an abortion. Not only is the choice a good one for the potential mother but it is also a good choice for the unborn child. Before sixteen weeks the unborn child is not even considered a fetus. That is why I believe that abortions before sixteen weeks are justifiable. I do not believe anyone just gets pregnant to have an abortion. The whole situation is both physically and psychologically painful for the woman. There are many factors to consider in choosing whether to carry a child to birth or abort, but these factors are very personal and can only be answered by the woman who has been confronted with the fact that she is pregnant.
Eventually the question leads as to when should abortion be limited, and why does it deserve to be legalized? Both sides have arguments for when it should be limited, even if pro-life advocates believe in stricter circumstances. Abortion should be limited if one of the two things are occurring: the mother herself is being put in danger, or if the fetus is viable. Fetus viability is the stage at which the fetus could survive outside of the mother 's womb. In this circumstance, it’s no longer an abortion but more of a homicide.
Many women do not realize there are numerous amounts of organizations and government assistance programs that are willing to take in newborns. Adoption is a common alternative; many women still choose to endure abortion procedures. Foregoing the abortion process may damage the females’ reproductive organs as well as bring on postpartum depression, and other internal health issues. Prochoice candidates have voiced their opinion as to why females have the right to do what they want with their bodies especially when faced with the decision of an unwanted pregnancy and the alternative available. Abortion will still be a big debate as well as a big decision in eliminating a potential child that could have one day meant something to the world.
Abortion is an important thing to think about because someone may need to make decisions about this in the future. There are many factors to consider, including religious/ personal beliefs and the health and wellbeing of the mother before any decisions are made regarding the pregnancy. Before a person sides with pro-choice or pro-life, they need to carefully consider and think about all the facts before deciding what they believe in. Remember, everybody has their own opinions, just because they are not the same as yours does not mean theirs is wrong or any less important than yours.
