The social demand for better schools, effective principals, qualified and committed teachers and better opportunities for all place a huge challenge to provinces and the state to protect the rights of all citizens. This volume sets out challenges facing the education system in South Africa, such as poor school infrastructure, poor learning conditions, and lack of learning materials and provides recommendations on how some of these can be overcome.
The poor quality of the majority of public education in South Africa’ is in itself a major injustice. At the individual level, it blocks the formation of skills and capabilities, preventing South African youth from realizing anything approaching their full potential. Poor education condemns them to lives with fewer opportunities, lower incomes, and a more limited capacity for self-determination. Low quality education is also an injustice to the broader society, causing the loss of an enormous amount of human potential. This slows development, making the eradication of poverty more challenging, and probably more distant. Over the longer term, it also damages national capacity for the provision of all forms of public services, including education itself. A population with high proportions of people having limited skills and opportunities, economic and otherwise, is also likely to be more susceptible to a range of other social ills such as violence and crime”.
As South Africans, we might think that our education systems is one of the best on the African continent. However, researcher and entrepreneur, “Mduduzi Mbiza” has investigated the system. The facts he has found reveal how critical the situation actually is.

Second, the emphasis on the arts as central aspects of the educational experience, the intense passion and investment of the teachers, their delight in the progress and also the individuality of their students. Also teachers often do not show up to teach at all, when they do show up, they often do little real teaching, because they are waiting to offer “private tuition”.

The system is divided into three strata, namely general education and training, further education and training, and higher education and training. Education is the key itself to success in life, education is becoming very important for career building in this era. A person who acquires higher education will have more skills, capable of doing multiple tasks as well as meet the job requirements.
Towards a theory of Anti-Oppressive Education
Oppression is a situation or dynamic in which certain ways of being are privileged in society while others are marginalized, by that time some students are treated in harmful ways and sometimes the harm results from actions by peers and teachers. Schools privilege certain groups and identities in society while marginalizing others by draw on the language of “normalcy” and “commonsense”. The power of a stereotype to harm either exist inherently in the stereotype or derives from social structures and ideologies.
And ideological force, but also movement against its own complicity with oppression. In particulars, teachers need to look at their internal ways of thinking and reinforce the harmful treatment of the others. Teachers must recognize the great diversity among student’s population, and, more importantly, that many learners are marginalized and harmed by various forms of oppression in schools.
Conclusion
The concurrent existences of low quality, high inequality and deep segregation in South African schooling has serious implications for justice. Particularly alarming is the tendency of these three properties to work together to reinforce societal injustice, creating what is effectively a self-reinforcing poverty trap, ensuring that the most disadvantaged members of society have few ways of improving their situation”.
