Respect As The Core Of A Multitude Of Aspects In Life
Respect is often said to be something that one can only earn, but what is respect? Respect, to me, is the acknowledgement of one’s abilities and understanding that everyone has dignity. When utilizing respect and treating someone or something with respect, the treatment is drastically better than something that is disrespected. While respect is not needed, it is greatly desired by all as it drastically increases morale and efficiency amongst a number of things, further creating a society of kindness and peace.Respect has been proven to increase efficiency and communication in the workplace and within communities. Singapore is the second most efficient nation in the world as rated by the World Economic Forum, a greatly respected source of statistics.
The “Father of Singapore”, Lee Kuan Yew, a distinguished and great man, was known to respect people of all religions, genders and races. Through a series of bills concerning education reform, Lee Kuan Yew brought Singapore to the status of a first world nation. This proved to be rather shrewd as trade with Singapore began to boom due to this. Through great respect of everyone else, Singapore created a nation of tolerance and acceptance which allowed for immigrants of greater skill to integrate with ease and wish to come there. The world without grace and respect leads to a greater number of conflicts, resulting in a worse world. The global public’s recent sharp ascension of distrust in the United States’ leadership is at the forefront of issues in even our European and Asian allies. The incumbent President, President Trump polled to be higher than President Obama out of thirty-nine nations in only two places: Israel and Russia. The aforementioned two nations are the ones that stand to benefit the most from Trump’s policies which is why they poll well with him, but the rest of the world finds his disrespect and childish nature to be something to incite fear into their hearts.
The nature of Trump alone is not the sole cause the rapid increase of global distrust, as many of his key policies are widely scorned with a medial of 22% having great conviction that Trump is able to do and will do the right thing concerning global politics. The direct precursor to the incumbent president, President Obama, stood at a strong 64% medial confidence in the world concerning America’s direct role in global politics. Through President Trump’s words, his fingers snaking around his screen with great haste, the global confidence concerning the United States’ ability to lead has been thoroughly shaken. While reading about the great amount of distrust placed in our president, I couldn’t help but think of how philosophers I had read about would broach this subject. As a result of my own impertinence, I was recommended to read about what respect truly is when I was younger.
For reasons unknown to me, I actually went ahead and read the texts that were recommended to me. As I read about respect and it’s basics, I realized how respect touches almost every aspect of life from injustice and oppression to morality and ethics. The concepts of bioethics, work ethics, alongside a great deal of other ethical applications work with respect on a truly fundamental nature. So I read and I read, and despite the fact that I will never be able to truly read enough about respect and other philosophical topics, I came to understand that respect is at the core of a multitude of aspects in life. Through reading some of the aforementioned texts, I learned how respect matters in a broad spectrum of cultures and places. Respect is used to keep peace, demonstrate admiration, and to create bonds to name a few purposes. It assists the world in becoming a better place but honestly, the world can function without respect. While it’s not recommended to be devoid of respect, it’s possible. Showing respect and being respectful allows you and society as a whole to become a better place.
As time went on, connections began to sporadically but sequentially appear in my mind. I realized that respect touches the lives of everyone on a global scale, from global politics to merely enticing people to join you. In Singapore, the culture of respect and tolerance that was cultivated by Lee Kuan Yew nurtured the young nation into being the global hub it is today. Through disrespectful actions and words, President Trump has instilled a sense of distrust in the minds of many throughout the world leading to a less stable world as a whole. I then saw the fact that I, through my great impudence, affected every single misturn in my life in a negative manner. Life can be great with respect and life can be rather cruel when shown a lack of respect.
