Science Vs Religion: The Debate Of Evolutionism Vs Creationism

As a young adult, I have grown an interest to why and how my body functions. I believe in order to actually fully grasp this I must first understand how my existence came to be from the debate of Evolution vs creationism. Secondly, I must understand how I came to be the person I am today whether it was nature or nurture that influenced my personality and will continue to. Lastly, the end of my existence of whether my soul will continue or will my physical energy cease to exist with the mind body debate. With my background in psychology, I am well rounded to explain and argue these debates properly. One of the most popular debates in the world is the debate of Evolutionism vs Creationism. This debate is such a controversial topic that some schools avoid the topic altogether. It's almost as if religion based people believe that just the mere mention of something that does not revolve around religion scares them. Evolutionism vs Creationism is the theory of how humans and the world came to exist. To specify Evolutionism, it is the theory that organisms progressively evolved over time into what they are now. Creationism is the theory derived from the Bible in the book of Genesis that the world and everything in it was created by God. My entire family is all religion based type of people and ever since I can remember I could never fully grasp the fact of religion. I wondered how people could put so much faith into something that they have never laid their eyes on and blindly follow without any real concrete facts. I was in middle school when I started learning about Evolutionism. The concept of it was much more easier to grasp than that of the religion theory. Why is that, because some scientists that I have never met said so. I put faith into man that and blindly followed him that’s when I realized the two theories aren't all that different. We are all making educated guesses with the information we are given. This debate is as old as time and both sides are arguable.

Nature vs Nurture is the theory of if human behavior is determined by the environment either before birth or during a person's lifetime or if it's determined by a person’s genes. The concept of a person's behavior basically being pre-determined because of their genes takes away the “free-will” we as humans think we have. On the other hand of the concept of a person's behavior being influenced by their childhood experiences, how they were raised, social relationships and surrounding cultures focuses on the part of a person's life they can't really control. What happens in basically the rest of our lives counts on the decisions a person's parents or caretaker make for them and do for them during their childhood. With this idea the thought of some stereotypes come into place. Such as the stereotype of people from low income families and neighborhood will eventually follow into the cycle of a low income life. I am a living example how that stereotype is false. I grew up in a low income family and a low income neighborhood. No one in my family went to college I am a first generation college student and I continue to break down the walls constructed against me defying all odds and stereotypes. I was adopted days after my birth because my parents were unfit to raise me. My biological grandmother died from breast cancer, therefore the gene for breast cancer lives within me. I live with the fact that one day I may indeed have breast cancer. Yes, this does play a part in influencing my personality. I try to take care of myself to keep my body healthy and keep a positive attitude because I know at any moment that can all disappear. With my first mammogram it may help me gain some relief or terrify me more. With the lingering fear in between each of my testings of whether that will be the day when my life will change forever. However this small part of me that may or may not emerge does not convey the full picture of me as a person there are so many more positive components about me.

The Mind/Body problem is a debate of whether the mind and the brain operate together or separately. The big question is if the mind and brain are fundamentally different in nature. The mind is about the mental processes, thought and consciousness. The body is about the physical parts of the brain such as your neurons and how the brain is structured. Within in this issue is the concept of dualism. Dualism is the view that the mind and body both exist separately. It argues that instead of the mind and body being a singular thing that they actually have a two way communication network. The mind communicates with the brain and the brain communicates with the mind creating in sync system. The opposite of dualism is the concept of monism. This is the theory that considers the possibility that the mind and body are actually the same thing and there is not a difference between the two. The mind/body problem ties into religion. The mind is basically the soul so the question regarding religion is if the soul and the brain are fundamentally different in nature. I am very much into how science and religion can sometimes overlap to prove or disprove the same theories. I grew up of the knowledge of knowing that my soul and body were two very different things. Once my physical body dies my soul/mind lives on but with this being said the thought of ghosts comes into question. If the mind and body are different things then how could the “Traditional ghosts” portray the physical aspects of the human body if only the mind lives on after the body. I love my share of supernatural stories whether they are true or not. The thought of something living on past the physical plane defies what science says. My senior year of high school I went to a total of seven funerals including classmates of mine, faculty members at my high school and family members distant and non-distant. I would like to think that they are all existing in eternal happiness but I can't be positive, because what if science is correct and there isn't anything left after death and it's just over. What if the theory of a soul and an eternal after life is just a coping method for humans instead of accepting the fact this is truly the only life we will get? So I reiterate the question: is the mind/soul and brain fundamentally different in nature? A question both science and religion have theories on. These issues weigh heavy on my own personal experiences and views of the world. Evolutionism vs Creationism is such a broad yet narrow topic. It relates to a specific period of time a time of no real evidence and based entirely off of theories. Nature vs nurture is a personal favorite of mine. I can relate the issue to so many problems within our society and with myself. The topic has so many different interpretations. The mind/ body problem has many interesting aspects that aren't just limited to the platform of Psychology but also the religion side of it and that's why Nature vs nurture and the mind mind/body debate will be the topics I will be focusing on closely.
