Starbucks As A Member Of Global CRS 100 Companies

Starbucks Corporation is an American coffee company and coffeehouse chain. As of 2018, the company operates 28, 218 locations worldwide. Below are few of the reasons for the inclusion of the company in the Global CRS 100 list:

Sourcing ethically and sustainably - Starbucks has combined with Conservation International and has ethically sourced 99percent of their coffee, making them the largest coffee retailer to reach this milestone. But Starbucks has believed there is always more to do and has committed to reach 100 percent ethically sourced.

Creating opportunities - In 2015 Starbucks committed to hiring 10, 000 Opportunity Youth by 2018. But their commitment was more to than just hiring. They wanted to create pathways to opportunity for the next generation of talented leaders. So in 2017 Starbucks expanded their goal to hire 100, 000 Opportunity Youth by 2020 and as of March 2018 they are already halfway to their goal with more than 50, 000 hires. They are also one of the best- in-class employer for youth, providing access to a competitive wage, health insurance and equity in the form of stock, career development, leadership support, mentoring opportunities and more.

Lead in green retail - Starbucks leads the retail section when it comes to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification around the world. They have over 1000+ LEED certified stores in 20 countries across all their three regions. These store includes the use of recycled coffee grounds in table tops; low emitting materials for adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings and flooring; over 10percent of materials extracted within 500 miles; and over 45 percent lighting power savings through the use of efficient LED fixtures.

Strengthen communities - Starbucks initiative volunteer match was started with a passion to help and improve the communities. Nearly 1, 700 times in 2017 Starbucks partners in the United States stepped forward to lead a local community service project impacting nearly 1, 700 communities and their neighbours.

Climate Change - Since 2004 Starbucks had been implementing a climate change strategy focusing on renewable energy and energy conservation. They are the proud founding member of Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP) to advocate for stronger climate change and clean energy policies. They are also a signatory to RE100, the global corporate commitment to purchasing 100percent renewable energy, as well as the Corporate Renewable Energy Buyer’s Principles.

Starbucks closely follows an interactive responsive behaviour. Starbucks has decided stop using disposable plastic straws by 2020. By adopting this they will eliminate more than one billion straws a year which are made of plastic. They plan to replace it with alternatives like recyclable, straw less lids, or, in the case of a particular drink, straws made from either paper or compostable plastic. This helps to eliminate the use of non-biodegradable element plastic which are harmful to the natural environment.

Starbucks and closed loop partners are set to develop recyclable, compostable cup solution. Starbucks has committed $10 million in partnership with Closed Loop Partners and its Center for the Circular Economy leading to the NextGen Cup challenge to accelerate grants to entrepreneurs to work on ideas that could lead to the development of more sustainable cup solutions and invite industry participation and partnership on the way to identifying a global solution. Thereby investing in planning, innovation and working to make the environment a more sustainable and greener one.

Ethically sourced coffee makes them one of the most interactive companies. Thereby providing a sustainable environment and better lives for the locally producing framers. Global green stores commitment in building LEED certifies stores also shows us their interactive behaviour when it comes to the environment.

Starbucks has gone through a few negative publicity and the following are the press reports respectively. Starbucks on May 29, 2018 had closed 8, 000 U. S stores for one day anti-bias training after arrest of two African-American men at the Philadelphia store by the store manager interpreting them as trespassers for they were sitting in the store without placing an order. But they were just waiting for their friend to arrive. The incident sparked an outcry, and CEO Kevin Johnson swiftly apologized and promised to make sure that nothing like that would happen at a Starbucks again.

Starbucks has been sued for not delivering the declared ounces of fluid in their iced drink. Instead of 24 fluid ounces they have been serving only 14 fluid ounces with the rest of cup filled with just frozen water. A group of 12 deaf people sued Starbucks under discrimination. In 2013, the company after a Manhattan location not only refused them of service, but mocked them and called the police in an effort to get them kicked out of the store discriminating against the hearing impaired. Starbucks has also been sued for plenty of sexual harassment cases. One such example was in 2015, an Illinois woman sued Starbucks after claiming she was sexually harassed while employed as a barista, and then she was fired for complaining about it.
