Summary

Bruno, a wealthy nine year old boy living in the early 1400’s, finds himself looking out of his bedroom window onto a large camp, full of many different men, all wearing striped pajamas. Bruno, not knowing what it is or why it is there, longs nothing more then to explore the camp, but still, he knows he can’t just go. Even being nine, Bruno knows it’s not a safe place to go exploring on any day, where he might be caught or lost. So he waits, and like a true explorer, Bruno sets out a plan. Bruno waits many days, until finally, he decides it’s the day to go. He packs a bag, of food and clothes, and sets out into a maze of bushes and trees, a forest almost, until finally, he reaches the fence. The fence, being bigger, spiker, scarier than the sight in his window, Bruno would’ve been terrified, and ran home, but something stopped him, and that was simply just a little boy.

Time goes by, and Bruno soon finds himself talking with that boy almost everyday, learning about the life on the other side of the fence. Everyday bruno learns more about his life, his family, the food, the sashes they wear, but still, he feels he hasn’t learnt enough until he has gone ver and explored the camp himself. Bruno and Shmuel (his friend on the other side of the fence) find themselves think up on lats adventure, and finally they agree for bruno to come over, to play, explore, and search for Dhmeauls missing father. The plan is all set out, bruno will come after lunch, change into an extra pair of pajamas, go over to Shmuel's side, explore and search for a few hours, then quickly return home for dinner. There plan is perfect, and when the day comes, the book ends.

Biography

“The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” was written by John Boyne, born April 30th, 1971. John came up with the idea for this book with a vision, in his vision he saw two boys, one in pajamas, sitting behind a fence with ugly dirt, and the other, dressed beautifully, and sitting in front on the fence, on a nice cushion of grass. He decided to put this vision into a book, and in 2006, his book was published.

John studied at both Trinity College, Dublin, and East Anglia University, Norwich. While he attended university, he won the Curtis brown prize. John was also born in Dublin Ireland, 1971, where he still lives now. John has received many awards, including the Henessy Liture “hall of Fame” award, the Children’s book of the year, people’s choice book of the year, and Short story of the year. John has also judged the Hennessy Literature Awards back in 2012. John has written many other books, and will release his newest book “My brother’s name is Jessica.” this April.

John likes and often writes about mature and more “uncomfortable’ topics. He likes writing about things other author’s often do not like to write about, and writes them in a creative way. Instead about writing about the war and the fighting, he writes about the difference between the germans and the jews, but children perspectives, and even though their enemies, their best friends.

Reflection

In conclusion, I really did love this book, as it brought both smiles and tears. This book really did bring in tears for me, as I found it difficult to read, but at the same time, I just couldn’t stop. I also really loved the way the author described things, and how he told you something without really telling what happened. I think the author has a great way of telling a story, for he often reveals the thoughts of characters in a way so that you feel it too. I also like how this author took on a very difficult topic, and wrote it in such a way that you understand and feel it, while still being able to get through. If I ever had the chance to read another book by this author, Then I would definitely read it.
