Terry Fox As Example Of Self-Leader
Self-leadership techniques, like cognitive therapy, enhance thougt control, helping people identify defeating thought and develop new thoughts to substitute those that are harmful for personal success. Self-leadership stimulates the examination of the accuracy of one's own thoughts and beliefs regarding oneself and any problematic situation at hand.
For example, examine yourself and ask' Have I failed at some-thing?' 'How do I feel about that?' ? 'What does it mean to me?'
For some people a failure is final; they create a catastrophe out of the failure and it allow it to define them. The self-leader, on the other hand, step back from the failure and frames it as a learn-ing experience, adjusting her thinking and behavior to move on, to overcome the difficult experience.
'Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again.Fail again.Fail better.' ( simuel Becktt irish play Wright and noble prize winner)
Self-leader are resilient and are strengthend from difficult experience. The term RESILIENCE' come from the field of physics, meaning the quality or property of some materials to quickly recover the original shape or conditions after being pulled, pressed, crushed, and otherwise distorted.Resilience does not mean invulnerability; rather, it means having the flexibility to respond to changing situational demand.Resilient people are able to experience positive emotions even in the midst of stressful events. The use of positive emotion is linked to the ability to cope with difficulties( being resilient ), and there is an indication that people who are able to experience positive emotions even during crises are also those who represent positive emotional experiences with precision and specificity ( rather than as global pleasant states ). They are able to deconstruct their life experiences into distinguishing detail and can use this ability to distinguish how parts of whole events can help them identify in difficult times, those moments that are really negative from those that are positive.
An inspiring example is Terry Fox, the long-distance runner and basketball player who had his leg ampuatated in 1977 after he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. With the help of an artificial leg, Fox was walking three week after the amputation. He then progressed to playing golf with his father. Doctors were impressed with the Fox's positive outlook, starting it contributed to his rapid recovery. He endured 16 months of chemotherapy and ended his treatment with new purpose: he felt he owed his survival to medical advance and wished to live his life in a way that would help others find the same courage he found. To fulfill that purpose, in1980, with his artificial leg, he embarked on a cross-canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
