The Analysis Of A Short Story "The Cast Of Amontillado" Written By Edgar Allen Poe
The Cast of Amontillado is a short story written by Edgar Allen Poe, its based on vengeance, to a man named Fortunato. However, as I read throw the story it was never mentioned why was Montresor so provoked by Fortunado. With that being said I believe that Montresor could be feeling jealousy towards Fortunato’s life and wealth. I find Fortunado as an innocent that does not know what is really going on making the story more intense. In the beginning I pictured Fortunado as a fun, happy and charismatic men dancing and joking around just being playful. On the other hand, the protagonist gave me a crazy vibe that was planning a murder on someone that probably didn’t deserve to be punished.
First off I was surprised to see how Montresos had everything planed out. He was being concerned on the well being of Fortunado to make him feel as much comfortable as he could. At the same time, he had him between a wall and a sword, because he knows how passionate Fortunado was for fancy wine. Montresor did fair enough give him many chances to back out. A cold would not stop him for his thirst of curiosity. Kind of the same situation of the saying of “curiosity killed the cat”. (Edgar Allan Poe,16) “We will go back; your health is precious.” Its the fist in many chances that he was given to wimp out and it could have saved him from such tragedy. More into the story he gave many other chances and Fortunato would fall for bait. He was too stubborn to realize that he was fading away the deeper they walked the catacombs. Fortunato through the story remained as if he enjoyed spending time with Montresor.
I honestly think that Montresor was just lunatic for the actions he took with Fortunado. As soon as Fortunato starts feeling bad Montresor gives him a drink. However, it was not because he was feeling sympathy. This was an act to keep him alive until he was buried as he was still breathing. Fortunato was also warned that the wine the he was consuming has high levels of nitre. Yet another chance was given but it was not taken. Little hints could have saved him. (Edgar Allen Poe,15) “My friend, no. it is not the engagement, but the severe cold with whish I perceive you are affiliated. The vault is insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre.”
