The Analysis Of Scott Westerfield's Uglies
Introduction
Welcome my name is Habiba, I am the CEO of California Productions and this is my production manager, Soobin. Today the topic that I will be discussing to you about is why producing a film for the novel Uglies is a good idea. This novel written by Scott Westerfield has a fantastic storyline and topic to be turned into a movie. California productions has produced many other billion-dollar films such as Beauty and the Beast, To All the Boys I've Loved Before and Clueless. We plan on creating the book Uglies into a phenomenal movie that will ensure to send out a positive message to not only young children but to everyone in general.
Plot
This novel is about a young girl; Tally Youngblood who wants to get her cosmetic surgery that each Ugly has at the age of 16. She cannot wait for her turn to be pretty like her old best friend, Peris. Yet, she becomes involved with insubordination to society and comes to welcome an existence where not every person is beautiful.
Characters
In the story, the main character is Tally, followed by her friend Shay. Shay and Tally are very alike they're both adventurous, the same age and they are both risk takers who like breaking the rules. However, the two clash in some ways; Tally wants to be a Pretty, whereas Shay is against the whole system and likes her ‘ugly’ self. She tries to change tally’s version of pretty and show her that everyone is pretty in their own unique way. If we get to produce this movie, then Scarlett Johansson would take the role of Tally and Shay would be played by Mila Kunis. This is because these actors have the similar physical appearances described in the book.
Setting
In the Uglies, there are three places that this story is set in; Uglyville, New Pretty Town, and the Smoke. Uglyville is where all the Uglies live before they turn into Pretties. As the name explains, New Pretty Town houses the new Pretties. The story also takes place partly in an unnamed city and partly in a small town in the wilderness called the Smoke. Approximately 300 years from now, Uglies takes place in the dystopian future.
Theme
Multiple themes such as beauty over personality, friendship and identity all appear somewhere throughout the novel. These all play a major role by adding meaning and excitement to the narrative. In the story, Tally believes that turning pretty will change her life for the better. However, this is only until she meets Shay who teaches Tally that she isn’t ugly. Just like how Tally wants to be the ideal ‘pretty’ many girls feel insecure about the way they look and in order to perfect their self-image many people turn to plastic surgery. The problem in our world today, is that too many young girls are constantly changing the way they look in order to be the idealistic ‘pretty’ as mentioned in the book. Turning this film into a movie will address this issue and make sure that teenagers and anyone else in general come to the revisitation that changing the way you look will not always make you happy and can lead to long term problems. Many people would become interested in this movie because of the famous actors that would play in it and the overall idea of the film which would be that being pretty isn’t always the solution. Ways we could promote this film is through social media, billboards and ads. These all would help excite the audience about the film.
Conclusion: Target Audience, when & where to premiere for movie, movie rating
The target audience for uglies are the ages 13 to 18. Uglies is suitable for these ages because this book shows the similar complexities teenagers have during their high school life. We plan on producing this film within one and a half years. We plan to release it during school holidays so teenagers are not at school and can find time to watch this movie. Teenagers tend to hang out with their friends, who are also the same age allowing more people to watch this movie. This film would be one of a kind because there a very few films that this kind of topic and storyline which would intrigue people to watch it. The cost of this film would be up to approximately 200 million dollars, but we believe will make double the amount.
