The Brief Description Of Disney Rapunzel

In the Disney version there lived a king and queen. The queen is pregnant but very ill and there is only one cure for her which is a flower made from a drop of sunshine. The king sends his soldiers to find it. The flower is found on a cliff in a basket and they take it to make a potion to cure the queen. However, the basket is owned by Mother Gothel, who has been using the flower’s powers to stay young and not age. She finds out that the flower had been taken and she hurries to the castle to bring the flower back, but finds out it has already been eaten by the queen. Therefore the powers are in the blonde hair of the baby princess. Gothel sneaks into the castle, steals the baby and then raises her to cheat old age. The king and queen let go of hundreds of lanterns every year on her birthday hoping that one day she will come back. In the Grimm version there lived a married couple who wanted to have a baby and after several years the wife finally got pregnant. One day the wife notices a patch of rapunzel (lamb’s lettuce) in the garden next door. She came to the decision that this is the only thing she wants to eat. Unfortunately, it is property of a fairy, Gothel, therefore no one dares to enter the garden and the wife becomes depressed and ill. Eventually, the husband steals some rapunzel for his wife, but when he gets back the next day to get more, he gets caught. He tries apologizing to Gothel and surprisingly she accepts his apology righ away and says he can take as much rapunzel as he wants. However, she also mentions that in trade for the rapunzel they have to give her the baby afterwards. The husband agrees out of fright and when their daughter is born, the fairy takes her away. She names the girl “Rapunzel” and the parents are never heard of again. Disney improved many elements of the original Rapunzel in the film. Furthermore, there is hope that Rapunzel will see her family again, while in the Grimm version there is not. Lastly, Disney’s Gothel takes Rapunzel so she can cheat old age whereas in the Grimm version it is a different story.

Disney’s Gothel imprisons Rapunzel in a tower somewhere in the middle of the woods. Everytime Gotel gets back from a trip she shouts out for Rapunzel to throw down her long hair out the window to use it as a ladder. Rapunzel tries to entertain herself by painting, reading and playing with her pet chameleon. Gothel tries to convince Rapunzel into staying in the tower, by saying that it is not safe outside of the tower. Like the Disney version, Grimm’s Gothel imprisons Rapunzel in a tower and shouts out for her to throw down her hair. We do not know how Rapunzel entertains herself (only that she sings at the window) or if she is happy or not. The difference is that in the Disney version Rapunzel is locked in a tower by Gotel to protect her secret, whereas in Grimm version it’s a totally different story. Grimm’s Rapunzel doesn’t do anything to flee and is not very intelligient nor active. Disney made Rapunzel much more active, intelligent and Gothel is very manipulative.

A young man helps Rapunzel escape, but each Rapunzel will find love and happiness differently. In Tangled, it is a thief, Flynn Rider. He steals Rapunzel’s crown from the palace, escapes into the wilderness and discovers the tower Rapunzel lives in. Flynn climbs up into the window and Rapunzel hits him several times with a pan. When Flynn wakes up Rapunzel makes a deal with him by saying he wil get back his bag if he takes her to see the lights in the sky. Flynn agrees and during their trip to the lights they help each other out in multiple situations. Rapunzel shows the powers of her hair and they have several talks about their hopes and dreams. From this point they start falling in love with each other. He shows Rapunzel the world she has been missing. He and Rapunzel kiss on a boat while finally watching the lanterns. In the Grimm version in stead of a thief it is a prince, who one
