The Concept Of The ‘Need For Uniqueness Scale’

The ‘Need for Uniqueness Scale’ is a scale for detecting the level of uniqueness that one wants. As per this scale normal scores extend somewhere in the range of 98 and 108. Scores lower than 98 demonstrate a lower requirement for uniqueness. Scores higher than 108 show higher requirement for uniqueness. As per my results, I got a score of ‘89’ which indicates that I have a low need for uniqueness. The scores according to me are accurate. Moreover, everyone has their own uniqueness. In the world, there are millions or billions of people having their own uniqueness. Everyone have their own uniqueness to do things differently and to be blissful.

In the article, “Cultural Values and Happiness: An East–West Dialogue” published in The Journal of Social Psychology, the authors analyzed the connection between social qualities and encounters of happiness by having a survey of both Western culture (British) and Eastern culture (Taiwan) students. Both students have their own unique culture and values. ‘Chinese individuals' origination of happiness generally incorporates material wealth, physical wellbeing, and peaceful life, and relief from the thought of death. On the other hand, for ‘British individuals’ the meaning of happiness is something that doesn't have anything connected with miracle. Physical well-being and as well as their personal achievements are their definition of happiness. Both of university students have their different but own unique way of joy.

Moreover, cultures might affect the level of happiness as in the article, “How Does Culture Affect Our Happiness? by Marianna Pogosyan Ph.D. , published in ‘Psychology Today’, the author showcases that we are humans and for everyone the route to achieve happiness is different. Similarly, there are various meaning of happiness as well, says author. Furthermore, different individuals have different sense of explaining what happiness is, as the author talks about some popular personalities and their meaning of happiness like; Dalai Lama suggests compassion; Antoine de Saint-Exupéry recommends creative action; and for Albert Einstein - happiness is a table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin, she added. In this article, everyone have unique definitions to happiness and their different way to achieve that, I believe.

The scale from which I measured my need for uniqueness, shows the levels of need for uniqueness I want. It's my culture, the way I raised and may be the language I speak, affects the way I think in different situations of my life. This scale might have influenced my level of happiness if I would have got a high need for uniqueness because I seriously don't want to be unique as I know I am unique as; my culture, values, made me unique. And I don't think it left any impression on my level of joy in anyway but, it definitely made me think that, I am a kind of person who less seeks the uniqueness and still blissful. Everyone have their own perspectives and uniqueness. The culture plays an important role in the way we are unique today, I believe.
