Lena “Mama” Younger being the main protagonist of the play and Walter Lee Younger being the deuteragonist had the most impact in the play. From Mama’s check to Walter throwing it all away trying to become a man. A raisin in the sun is a play written by Lorraine Hansberry in 1959. The Play is about a 5th generation African American family living on the south side of Chicago, poor and tired of their living conditions. Mama’s Husband sadly passes away, from his passing mama receives a check for $10,000. The whole family is anxious for it to arrive, but ultimately its all Mamas. Everyone wishes to use the money for their own desires, but all believe it will the family out. From wanting to buy a liquor store to wanting to buy a house. In the end mama decided what she thought was best for the family.
With the play taking place in southside Chicago between WWII and the present the younger family waits for the check to arrive. The check is a life insurance check for $10,000 for the death of Mr. Younger, Mamas husband. Mama wants to use the money to put a down payment on a house. Walter wants to buy a liquor store to make more money and stop working has a personal chauffeur. He wants to become a man again by being the head of the house again. When the check finally arrives, Mama went and put a down payment on the house, which in total was $3,500. She then gives Walter $6,500 to put $3,500 in his bank account and the rest for Ruth’s medical school. The next day Walter does what no one expected would happen. He gave all the money to Willy to get a liquor license, so he can buy a liquor store and make his income from that. Bobo the other person in this deal comes and tells Walter the bad news. Willy took Both of their money and ran away with it. Now with the whole family knowing what Walter did with the money, everyone is in disbelief with what just happened. Bennie, Walters Sister and Mamas Daughter, was especially mad at him for wasting away her medical school money. Walter only wanted what he thought was best for the family. Walter wanted to make sure they never had to struggle again to make ends meet. He wanted to feel like a man again. When the moving day finally comes, and everyone is waiting for the movers. Walter decides to call Lindner who is from the welcoming committee. Lindner Came later that week to tell them that the whole neighborhood where Mama bought the house, wanted to buy the house back from them because they didn’t want any colored people living there. When Lindner came by after Walter called him, he expected for the family to accept the check and be gone from that area. Little did he know Walter called him to tell him that he was not going to accept the money because his family has a lot of pride. Then the movers came, and everyone took a box or belonging and the play ends with Walter becoming a man.
Walter Lee Younger Started the play being angry at his living conditions and his life. All Walter wanted was to buy a liquor store and become a Man. He feels has if he isn’t a man anymore since he isn’t at the top of the house hold. His mother is, and he wants to be in charge.
