The Effect Of News Media Outlets On Globalization

Within today’s society, the influence of the news such as FOX, CNN, Weather Channel, etc. all have a key role in showing globalization. This is done by news stations providing the audience with an image of cultural differences between countries. These sources show us new technologies, films, music, and lifestyle throughout the world. Connecting with people around the world is now much easier than a few years ago. News on the internet, television, and satellite radio make it very easy for people around the world to know the latest news. With news media outlets being worldwide, this allows for an increase in connection, empathetic ideas, and cooperation with our neighboring countries. These media communication outlets in one way or another affect globalization by overcoming any cultural barriers between countries, races, and religion through communication.

The referenced news media outlets hire employees that are located worldwide in other countries. Because of this global communication, they are able to communicate around the world. We can turn on these news channels on our computers, tablets, and phones and know what is happening on the other side of the world in real time. News colleagues can converse and share news through Skype, facetime, and or video chat without leaving their office space and feel as if they are in the same room. With new technology making it easier to access news media outlets, globalization and global communication have made it much easier for people to see and learn about other countries and their cultures without it being a mystery.

In “We Are a Camera” by Nick Paumgarten, he stated “The ripening of the technology in the camera, after a half decade of tinkering, coincided with the fruition of broadband and the emergence of YouTube, Facebook, and other social-media platforms for the wide distribution of video”. In this quote, it shows how the introduction of the GoPro has created a distribution of videos through social media platforms. With these videos, new media outlets take them and explore them, creating stories about the meaning behind them. The videos can show people all around the world sharing their lifestyles and their traditions. It shows the advantages of new opportunities in different countries by offering and improving new technology and spreading culture. In addition to spreading culture and improving technology, it shows how easy it is today to spread information and communicate with our neighboring countries. The new opportunities within new media outlets have led to fewer cultural barriers between countries, races, and religion. Culture and traditions shown through new media outlets teach empathetic ideas and creates communication with others. Globalization has made this possible through the use of technology such as worldwide news media outlets, causing cultural barriers to become less prevalent.

In the section “Globalization creates culture” on page 260 by Yo-Yo Ma, he talks about the use and advantages of STEM vs STEAM. He states by adding in the arts to education worldwide, this allows for students to learn empathetic ideas and use more critical thinking. He stated, “Culture is a fabric composed of gifts from every corner of the world. One way of discovering the world is by digging deeply into its traditions. ” (Communicating with others around the world through news media outlets have allowed for a more empathetic world. Using STEM vs STEAM, without the arts new outlets would not be who they are today. Traveling places, writing stories, and communicating with others are all learned through the arts class. Adding in the arts to STEM has allowed these new stations to think more critically and put out more detailed and impactful stories. Learning new empathetic ideas allows for these news media outlets to travel across the world to developing countries, create an interesting story about them, and eventually provided aid and support from the influence that news outlet has. With technology being so globalized, it has allowed for this communication to be much simpler, by allowing us to see the struggle within our neighboring countries and be able to help each other without having to leave our chair. Therefore, by the increase in technology and it being so globalized, it has allowed news stations like the Weather Channel to cooperation with others around the world easier. We can now prevent and protect from natural disasters by just turning on the TV or listening to the radio.

Technology in news media outlets have grown through the past decade. Today news stations such as the Weather Channel, have new technologies that help and prevent natural disasters. With a source of watching or listening to the alerts the Weather Channel provides so easily, we can prepare disasters from happening all around the world. This allows for cooperation with our neighboring countries, which allows us to communicate with others. New stories help communities rally together to aid places that are affected by natural disasters. These news media outlets provide various opportunities to assist those in need. For example, local telethons to raise money and locations to drop off supplies. Some news reporters will travel to affected areas and report right in the middle of the chaos. This gives the public the opportunity to experience what is going on in the other parts of the world first hand. The probability of impact from natural disasters such as hurricane is shown with assistance from multiple resources found globally. In ‘Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education’ by Yo-Yo Ma he states, “The arts help us cope with these issues by engaging, not avoiding, the deep emotions of intimate loss involved and retelling over and over again the story of the human condition and its limits. Only then we can we can regain our spiritual balance and find meaning in more than trying to technically manage every aspect of our being from womb to tomb”. To me, this quote means that in the face of natural disasters, most people come together to help each other. But, there is always the certain few who would rather video record for a news station to gain views and publicity, than help the ones in need.

In conclusion, the use of news media outlets such as Weather Channel, etc. all play a role in globalization through communication. Within the news, it has allowed for an increase in business opportunities, removal of cultural barriers, increase in technological help. With news media outlets being world-wide, this allows for an increase in connection, empathetic ideas, and cooperation with our neighboring countries. Therefore, globalization and communication have made it easier for people to see the other side of the world and learn about their cultures and traditions without being a mystery.
