The Environmental Damages Of Oil Spills

There is a large history of oil spills that have taken place in our oceans causing significant environmental damage to our waters, sea bottoms and marine life. Our government needs to take steps that prevent accidents from occuring from offshore drilling and shipments involving big oil tankers to make sure oil spills don’t occur. “Oil spillage is a global issue that has been occurring since the discovery of crude oil, which was part of the industrial revolution”. I chose this quote because it talks about that oil is dangerous and if it goes to the ocean the animals could die. “Oil spills have posed a major threat to the environment of the oil producing areas, which if not effectively checked can lead to the total destruction of the ecosystems”. This quote talks about that the oil could immediately kill people because some adults throw oil on purpose in the ground and when the kids touch them they need to wash their hands. “On January 28, 1969, an oil well blowout resulted in the uncontrolled release of three million gallons of oil into the Pacific Ocean near Santa Barbara, coating affected waters along a 35-mile stretch of coastline with as much as six inches of oil”. This quote explains that the oil well blowout in the ocean and destroyed things also the animals are going to die even though the water will get really nasty. “Since the 2010 Gulf Of México oil spill, there has been a rise in interest from oil companies and government departments in funding new techniques for reducing the environmental impact and cost of future oil spills”. This quote explains that the oil was expensive to buy in 2010 and in 2019 it is not expensive to buy anymore because they are cheap now. “The Warri refinery commissioned in 1978 with an initial capacity of 100,000 barrels per day of light crude oil, the refinery was later expanded in 1986 to a capacity of 125,000 barrels per day”. This quote explains that the people expanded of barrels of light crude oil in some other place that they didn’t wanted to be their anymore. “The region has huge oil and gas reserves, and ranks the sixth world’s largest exporter of crude oil and ranked as the third world’s largest producer of palm oil after Malaysia and Indonesia”. This quote explains that the oil is getting larger and that it could explode also that is bad because people could die with it. “In July 1979 the Forcados tank 6 Terminal in Delta state incidence spilled 570,000 barrels of oil into the Forcados estuary polluting the aquatic environment and surrounding swamp forest” (Ukoli, Tolulope, 2004). This quote is talking about that people spills to much oil on the floor so something could happen. “It shows that in the worst-case discharge event, 7. 9 million barrels of oil would spill into the ocean over 149 days-the time needed to drill a relief well stop the flow”. This quote is talking about that the government is trying to stop the oil of spilling around the things because kids could touch the oil and die with it. “Newfoundland and labrador's offshore regulator and a provincial cabinet minister are demanding answers from Husky Energy after what’s believed to be the largest oil in the provinces history”. I think the oils are offshoring because there are too many oils that are getting larger and dangerous.

Major oil spills typically trigger heightened public concern for highly visible species such as birds and marine mammals. The chemicals in crude oil that we know are toxic to fish enter waterways not only large oil spills but also every day in smaller quantities, as from motor vehicle exhaust and through stormwater runoff from streets and parking lots. “Oil remains on the inside of the oil dispersant glob in contact with the nonpolar parts of the dispersant molecule with an affinity toward oil” (Deirdre S. Blanchfield). As reported in April, had also attempted to support its drilling plans by claiming an oil spill would benefit nearby coastal towns because the clean up would boost their economies. “Oil spills from container ships or offshore platforms are a frequent hazard to marine and coastal ecosystems and an expensive one to clean up” (Tamara Thompson). The presence of dissolved crude oil in water poses significant environmental hazards to aquatic lives. Oil is one of the most important energy sources in the developed world. However, oil spill accidents often take place during the oil utilization process, resulting in energy loss as well as threats to the environment. “Oil and chemical spill accidents can be caused by human mistakes and carelessness, deliberate acts such as vandalism, war and illegal dumping, or by natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes”. “Offshore and shoreline waters can be polluted by oil drilling operations, accidents involving oil tankers, runoffs from offshore oil explorations and productions, and spills from tanker loading and unloading operations”. “It is important that after an oil spill the marine cleanup operation should collect or adsorb quickly a major part of the oil spilled, especially in coastal areas. Oil-polluted water often contains other substances as well as oil”. “Low water pickup high oil retention capacity during transfer, high recovery of the absorbed oil with simple methods, good reusability, high buoyancy, and excellent physical and chemical resistances against deformation, photodegradation, and chemical attacks. “Our ability to predict the effects of oil spills large and small on marine ecosystems will advance in only small steps, with punctuated bursts of progress in reaction to major spill events”.

I think the beginning was talking about the oil is destroying the ocean and a lot of animals died which is that there will no be people getting inside the water “The ongoing oil spill from the blown-out well by the name of Macondo, drilled by the ill-fated rig Deepwater Horizon, has many features in common with another blowout in the Mexican Gulf that happened three decades ago”. “The oil extraction has also increased from under 3 million tons a day in 1960 to 10 million tons daily in 2005, where it has since remained”. In the first decade of the third millennium, the average was 21 000 tons, with no year above 63 000 tons” (Oil Tanker Spill Statistics). “Which in the case of snails after a massive oil spill might take a while, the mats of algae were so thick and wide that it took a long time for the original balance to re-establish”.

The conclusion is that the person was right about the oil spills because I thought that they won’t be a lot of things that will cause waters and damage the marine life. The other thing is that I never knew that the government needs to check the step of the shipments involving big oil tankers. I never knew that if the oil touches the water then it will destroy the ocean and all the animals will die. Also the ocean would also stink and that’s bad because then the kids could get very sick and it’s dangerous because they could die with it too. The oil could really explode really fast in the tanker and if there was a house next to it, it will destroy it and people could die with it.
