The Importance Of Public Relations In Business
As it states in the book, “Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics”. In my own words I would say the main objective of public relations is to maintain a positive reputation of the company and to have that same objective with the relationship of the public, customers, employees, etc. You ultimately want to maintain a positive view about the organization as well as its leaders, products and future decisions. You always want to portray the company as if it does no wrong, that everything you are doing as an employee is how it should be done and that you’re not doing anything wrong. The practice of public relations has grown enormously since it was founded back in 1948. The field has a strong membership across more than 80 countries and still growing and improving.
In the 21st century the public relations field has grown in enormous numbers but also respect because it is a clear growing industry all on its own. In the United States alone, PR has grown to be a multibillion-dollar business, which has more than 200,000 practiced professionals. It is constantly updating its practices and creating more and more jobs for people all around the world. Studies say that the public relations employment will grow 12% between 2012 and 2022 which will create an additional 27,400 jobs all around the world that will have to be fulfilled. It not only creates thousands of jobs all across the world but it I think one of the most important things it does is increases brand credibility. It’s important for businesses to have trust from their clients, building that foundation of the relationship is really important because that is the basis of their entire relationship. Having that trust goes a long way in determining the overall success of the relationship. When you don’t have that trust or when you start lose that trust, it translates into a lost opportunity or a loss in potential sales. That’s why companies focus so hard on having such a good PR team because they want as many good relationships as they can so it makes the company look and preform better.
If you run into having a bad reputation, possibly with a client that ended badly, PR can help rebuild that relationship with a new relationship or they can fix the damages that came with the bad one. Public Relations has the ability to change the perceptions that people have about your business. I believe that is why companies look to hire so many PR representatives because each of them have different personalities to try and repair ruined reputations. If not, they will lose service because people won’t be happy with them and will turn to a different company.
