The Influence Of Technology On Real Interaction
Introduction
Recently, the increasing uses of technology became the big influencer and change effect in today’s life. According to Julie Kagawa, The Iron King, “the technology could take over all of our believed to the world and imagination, ” indirect means that society is slowly avoiding the real interaction to the world in front of people and focus on his/her screen. Gadget becomes the priority of nowadays people. People begin to forget that gadget is only a secondary needed. After the increasing of screen time, the direct interaction decrease. It means that the increase of the screen interaction does not support a real interaction, and it gives some negative impact on the social face interaction and the psychological habit.
Firstly, the excessive using of gadget decreases the sociable body gesture responding to someone. It includes how to “give a response from the face, eye contact, or even gestures”. Does people know that a simple response like a smile, answer someone’s greeting, and eye contact to someone means a big thing, which is a respect. Respect not only to show attitude to someone older but also how to pay attention to someone who talks. According to Melissa Nilles, Art & Entertainment Editor, she said that “face time is important. How much time people spent to chat with someone and gave many emoticons could not replace the real expression, expression of happiness, sadness, smiling eyes of shyness, etc. ” Can people imagine, if someone asks a person, then the person answers with looking on the screen? What does someone feel? Even the person gives the answer clearly; it will be different with someone who answers with looking into the eyes. In other case were gestures. How was someone’s response when seeing his/her friends pass kind of hard test? The real people will hug, give congratulation, or high-five, right? A person will so gratefully when knowing that people give empathy or try to feel what someone else’s feelings. However, if someone gives not proper response like giving congratulation, but the person’s face on the screen. The person feels like the achievement means nothing to his/her friends. As simple as that, giving a proper gesture is needed, not only for responding but also for respecting someone.
Secondly, the gadget does people less critical thinking and hang on it without considering people around them. Preceding generation is cleverer and not too independently like this recent generation. What makes it different? The thing that makes it different is the using of technology in solving our problem. Nowadays people tend to do it silently and focusing on screen without knowing what happens with circumferences and sharing how to deal with it. Of course, people cannot go far without the gadget. According to Dr. Maria Wimber, a lecturer at the University of Birmingham's School of Psychology, she said that it is true if our memories cannot be the same as our preceding generation, society thought that the storage of internet is easier to save and find because “internet knows everything”. Just type a question on the internet, the answer will appear. Nevertheless, that way can alienate someone and his/her circumference too. A student need to socialize from the small thing like help someone to solve something or to discuss classwork. “Empirical evidence also suggests by sharing team members’ expertise, knowledge, and skills; teams can develop its creative potential”. The discussion gives more benefit than only hang on the internet. The students can build more interaction and connection in real communication. Besides that, students also can have varying knowledge and creative solution that comes from the mind without using a gadget.
Thirdly, the lack of face-to-face interaction leads people to decrease social intimacy. Beside decreasing a connection, it also can decrease the social intimacy. Social intimacy not always about a couple, it can classify in terms of family or society. People tend to spend a holiday on facing the screen rather than having a vacation or quality time with family. Society begins to priority on his/herself comfort zone with technology. It is not a rare accident in today’s generation. According to Larissa Hjorth and Sun Sun Lim (2012), “the mobility of the internet mobile media both blur and reinstate boundaries between online and offline worlds”. Most people cannot differentiate the time and the usage of the gadget itself. Quality time must be the time for people to take a rest from technology. People need to focus on someone, on his/her story, problem, or even small talks to build a good and real relationship. Having three best friends is better than ten online friends. Doing sharing problem or story with friends is better than just sending a status to attract someone’s attention. People cannot hang on online friends when having a sudden problem or tell secrets. People cannot guaranty on his/her existence to help. People need to concern about the impact on real life that comes from the excessive of screen time.
Conclusion
The overuse of technology makes people gives less attention to their circumferences and how they interact with the other.
