The Issue Of Bias Against Women
Bias against women is not a new phenomenon as women are a marginalized segment of society who are discriminated in daily life; however, with the passage of time, the monster of bias has taken different forms and shapes that are explained and criticized by sociologists as well as feminists.
One of the manifestations of bias attitude can be viewed as androcentrism, which is critically observed and expressed by a famous feminist Anderson in the light of male dominating scenarios. In her view, “knowledge practice is androcentric” (Saul) which means that male point of view or masculine point dominates in a description of culture, history, education, literature, art, sports, politics and other disciplines. In other words, masculinity patterns of life are highlighted and acknowledged as norms while female experiences are taken a back seat as considered as deviance.
Besides, male experiences and achievements are glorified while female contributions are conveniently ignored no matter how difficult their tasks are. For instance, in our current society, where male members work outside for earning money and females take responsibility of houseworks; the labour done by male members is considered valuable and the extraneous work carried out by women is attributed as unproductive and leisure. This attitude shows apathy towards the utility of women work and also neglects the fact that without the support of female members of a family, the male members could not have delivered their job in a befitting manner.
Other than Anderson, scores of feminists have also highlighted bias attitude prevailing in a society that keeps the masculine point of view at centre and completely ignores female perspective or gives little importance to their point of view. For example, during an sexual intercourse, both of the sexes male and female are equally involved to make it a successful venture, and they both reach to a climax that is described as orgasm; however, only male orgasm is considered as of adaptive value.
Nevertheless, women have to embrace a lot of discrimination as compared to their male counterparts. First of all, they are not given financial freedom which means that they are either not allowed to earn money or not allowed to spend as per their desire even if they earn. Besides, women are not given their share in family property as male members usurp their rights. Apart from it, they are not given equal opportunity in the field of education, health, and sports.
In conclusion, women are the victims of bias attitude by the hands of society due to male dominance mindset and certain myths. Unfortunately, their point of view is overshadowed by their male counterparts. Besides, there are certain myths that prevent women to take a lead role in social, political, and economic affairs. Given the fact that women are marginalized and not given due rights, they continue to fight against discrimination and asset their importance by giving stand out performances in every walk of life.
