The Issue Of Movies And Music Piracy And Solutions To Prevent It
In everyday life we use the internet very often, and in most of those times we use the internet for entertainment purposes such as Watching online videos, listening to music or looking at funny pictures. But most of those times those movies or videos that you watch are illegally downloaded from the creator and reproduced by another person who most of those times doesn’t get permission from the creator. So that act of stealing someone’s work on the internet and reproducing it is called online piracy. Using the Internet to illegally copy and/or distribute software, which is an infringement of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (or DMCA) in the United States Is the definition of Online piracy.
You might say how does piracy affect our lives? Well to that I answer that piracy affect lives of many people who most of them are creators’ people who make movies, music, etc. For example, convicted felon Gregory Hart, who ran the site htmlcomics.com, threatened Coleen Doran with legal action when she asked him to remove her work from his site. After wrangling for a year, a coalition of major publishers and the FBI took him down. As you can see piracy can affect lives of many people if not stopped. Especially people who dedicate all of their time to create an art work to try and make a living and then instead of getting paid for it instead it just gets stolen and sold by someone else and that person gets your hard-earned money.
These people who make websites where you can download videos or music are not any different than thieves these people steal people’s work and gain money out of other peoples hard earned cash. We might not even realize that we’ve been making these people who steal other peoples work money just by downloading a five second video or a short movie you might make people lose their money and giving it to someone who doesn’t own the money. According to a recent study, Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) suggested that the main reason that consumers commit online piracy is price, but that earlier access to content, the perception of peer acceptance and the proliferation of ad-supported websites offering free content are also to blame. Maybe a single downloaded file is worth very little but the accumulation of these downloaded content may cost people a fortune.
Internet piracy first started in 1999 with a P2P (peer to peer) service that lets you download songs for free, Napster. The people who Napster were eventually for copyright infringement at Napster on December 7, 1999 and by February 12, 2001 was no longer able to allow copyrighted music. After that there are still a lot of people who own less known websites and are still roaming around in the internet and uploading other people’s work and making money out of other people’s work and they haven’t been caught because a lot of people don’t want to pay or can’t afford to buy a movie or music so the first thing they turn to are these websites.
These people are stealing people’s money and no one is doing anything about it because people use these websites a lot because if there is a cheaper option or an option that makes you not pay anything people would probably choose that option. Because even if the quality is not as good as a fully paid one people can still accept it because they are not paying for anything so people are still enjoying these services although it is not beneficial for some people like the ones who created it. These people put a lot of effort into their work and for it to be stolen by other people who put barely any effort and gain a lot of money by doing it.
So I propose that we create an organization that finds these illegal services and shut these websites or services that they own because it’s clearly contradicting the copyright law that protects people’s work from getting stolen and published by other people. Maybe before that what’s more important is getting the message out there that online piracy happens and many people fall victim to it and tell people that people are suffering because of it. To get the message out there can be something as simple as making flyers, posters, maybe posting a blog about it maybe even make a seminar about why online piracy is bad and how we should handle it. These small things can affect people around the entire world.
As a global citizen it is our job to make the world a better place and minimizing this issue is very beneficial for a lot of people who can post their creative work and not be scared of people stealing all their hard work. If you want to watch a movie or listen to music don’t support these illegal services just because it is a cheaper option think about these people who are suffering because of this small thing. So in my opinion there is usually a safer and better option other than these people who are basically selling to you other people’s stuff. Also, usually these services like these websites are fake and instead of giving you something that you believed you were getting and you instead get viruses or weird programs. That is why you should usually choose the safer option like for music you can listen to Spotify that guarantee you high quality music or you can watch videos on YouTube and are guaranteed to not get you any weird viruses and is still a cheap and safe option that can guarantee that your gadgets are safe and not in danger.
We as global citizens are supposed to protect the world by making it a better place but if we haven’t stopped something like this can we truly say that we’ve changed the world to be a better place. This issue if not stopped could be very bad not just for one country but for the entire world. People would fear to lose their hard work and not make any art work whether it be movies, music, etc. If people are to afraid to even try and make something how can we as a community evolve to be better. We need to solve this issue as fast as possible so that people might not live in fear of getting their art work stolen from them. To stop this issue is as simple as ever it’s just by not downloading these files that these people are trying to give you illegally.
But even if we don’t download these files how can we tell them apart from the real one you might say and to that is say that we should make seminars or videos or classes that teaches people to tell them apart. These seminars or classes might be as short as just maybe one to two hours just enough to teach people how to tell them apart. If we stop even just one or two downloads per seminar or classes might not be as impactful as it seems. But if there is only 200 classes or seminars per month still 200 times 2 is still 400 downloads that we stop per month that might be very helpful to the original creator plus if we take that 400 and times it by 12 months it is 6800 downloads per year and that is a really large amount and is very helpful to these creators. So just by spending 1 or 2 hours to find out about this I might only take you just 15 minutes but to know about this is the first big step to stopping this issue but that’s only just a plan we need this big community as a global citizen we need to execute this plan. We as global citizens have an obligation to help this world in any way shape or form maybe just by posting a picture or make a flyer maybe a short video that can get the message out there these little things might make people aware that this issue is getting big and is going to impact the world in a very negative way.
Although people might see online piracy as positive and people tend to look for these services because maybe they think it’s a free service and won’t harm anyone. But these services are very bad even if they can make you very happy and entertained it is still not the right thing to do. We have to take these websites down because it’s making money of someone else’s hard work. Even if you think it is very easily accessible and is better financially for some people because most people won’t even pay 5$ for food they definitely wont pay even 1$ for a movie or music. Even if we don’t think that online piracy is a big issue and ignore it might make this issue get bigger than it needs to be it’s the same as ignoring a fire that is burning down your house and you do nothing not even call the fire department. The more and more we ignore it the worse these issues can get It might even be a global issue. And as global citizens we need to prevent it at any cost we have to stop this issue before it gets to big to handle. Even if you only tell your friends and family about it still it is helping the world even if it’s that small but if we combine all those little things it can be bigger than one giant thing.
Even I before I researched about this use these websites very often but once I researched about this issue the more and more I start to realize what I’ve been doing might have impacted people’s live in a very big negative way. I realized that my actions might have cost people fortunes. But after I researched it I have not opened any of these services and told many people about it these things that these services are bad. I have reflected on myself and found out that I do these things really often so now I won’t support these services anymore.
So in conclusion this issue needs to be stopped by us global citizens. As global citizens we can make people aware of this problem and solve it before it gets out of hand so I believe that as global citizens we can create a better world starting from solving this issue. This issue has to be stopped by us because if we don’t act then who will ,So let us change the world one issue and one step at a time.
