The King Arthur's Character As Symbol Of Comfort For Society
This film is about the legend of king Arthur and the sword in the stone with a fantasy aspect to it (giant elephants, mages, giant snakes, etc) . When he began his life outside the walls of the castle he was very naïve and found it hard to make his way. But luckily he was a quick learner. Arthur began picking up tricks on how to get around his problems and began making money at a young age. When he grew into an adult he began putting his time into protecting those who looked after him and started to become known throughout the kingdom. When the Excalibur eventually showed itself, he was among the men who were forced to try and pull it out of the stone. Obviously, he pulled it out because he is king and because he pulled it our he is now hunted by the current king (his uncle who killed his father to become king). And when he wields the sword it gives him some pretty awesome powers. Arthur learns to control the swords power by venturing to the alter where it was made and then goes back to the kingdom to challenge his father murderer for the thrown.
And now for how it subverts…
Arthurs whole character subverts the fantasy genre. As a king, he should be disciplined and serious all the time. But in fact, Arthur is the complete opposite. He is incredibly sarcastic and frankly doesn’t really care about anything unless it involves his friends or family. Throughout the whole movie he is seen making sarcastic comments and jokes about matters that determine life or death. “Is that what all the fuss is about”, “I think I can manage”. Don’t get me wrong he has some traits of the hero in a fantasy story, he’s noble, skilled, a role model, and is a king that people would follow. Fantasy says that he needs to be like Aragon from the Lord of the Rings, a heroic character that never has much to say but will always defend the week and helpless. He does all of this but he has an extra aspect of immaturity to his character.
King Arthur was made in 2016 and was released in 2017. This was during the time that Donald Trump was elected as president of the United States. When he was elected I noticed and I’m sure that many other people did, but people were scared and were sorta freaking out. They were worried that Trump was going to do something stupid and end the world or something. Because of this the Arthurs laid back and sarcastic character could have been created to comment on societies fears and to say “there’s nothing to worry about” and to say that people worry too much. Or there’s no need to worry all the time.
