The Main Culprits Of Current Extinction Crisis
As the world changes so do the animals that live among it. If a specie is unable to adapt, then it has an increased possibility of becoming extinct. The main culprit for the increased extinction crisis is humans. By removing much of animal's natural habitat, this leaves many animals without homes and food. Overhunting leads to animals’ extinction such as the carrier pigeon. Finally, the increase of global warming has led to ice caps melting and many habitats being destroyed. Humans are the main culprit of why many animals have gone extinct. One part of the problem is due to deforestation. Many companies are responsible for the loss of much of the trees and foliage. Cutting down trees exterminate animals’ habitats and leads to many animals having to migrate and find alternative homes. One example is bears. As the loss of there forest slowly brought them out and on to residential land. Due to this people have had to hunt bears to keep them out of homes. Although the bears are just looking for food or a place to stay, humans take this as an invasion therefore harming the bears.
The main culprit is large companies. One company that’s greatly helping the environment is HP. “HP is one company that’s responding to this need for action. WWF and HP are embarking on an ambitious partnership to help restore, protect and improve the management of global conserve forests, starting with nearly 200,000 acres in Brazil and China.” Some companies are trying to right their wrongs and help undue what wrong. This helps with the Extinction crisis and the loss of habitats. Due to their help, many animals are being reunited with their old habitat. Just having one compony start this prosses off could lead to many others help deforestation stop. Overhunting is another example of humans leading to an extinction of an animal. Weather it be as sport or for need, it has led to the extinction of other animals. The Passenger pigeon was once an abundant bird in North America. When migrating would black out parts of the sky, but they soon became hunted for meat due to their abundance. As the time went on their numbers dropped dramatically. “After that the population plummeted until, by the mid-1890s, wild flock sizes numbered in the dozens rather than the hundreds of millions (or even billions).” At the end of there species life only three were left in captivity. The last living passenger pigeons name was Martha. She lived 29 years in captivity. Another form for illegal hunting is poaching. Poaching has caused many species to almost go extinct. One example is any of the seven species of marine turtles. One main breed of turtle that is highly poached is the leatherback turtle. Their shell has a leather texture and can be used for decoration or medicine. Poachers are causing there extinction by gathering their eggs and catching them. If this continues the life of these animals are endangered and fear extinction.
Finally, the last leading culprit of the extinction crisis is global warming. Global warming is mainly due to green house gasses. These slowly eat away at the atmosphere causing the weather and temperature to rise. Scientists have high confidence that global temperatures will continue to rise for decades to come, largely due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities.
