The Modern Understanding Of The World As Organized Around States
Since the formation ofsociety, humans have felt unhappy, unsafe, and that they are alone. Humans have given part of their freedom to a state that will grant their protection and supposedly give them what they want. This means having to renouncetheir liberty in order to form the state which requiresobedience and having to comply with the laws and norms. The stateshapes our world and is around us, controls and changes us.
For a state to gain power it needs consent and obedience from the people. Consent is giving authorization for something to occur. It is a tendency for civilization to fear, so agreeing on a sovereign allows guidance and protection in exchange for freedom. An example that reflects this would be religion. Since the beginning of time, humanity hasbelieved in religion for thousands of years and was to be established aspriority because it promised safety as long as the beliefs were obeyed. The modern state functions similarly ashumans needthe state to organize themselves. Humans by nature try to form society and groups with systems, if current states or governments like the ones implementedtoday did not exist then societywould still continue toform a new type of organization. States canbe positiveand negative, but in most cases, states are interested in shaping society. States put civilization into categories and rule them(Sep, 19). Nowadays people are bornin to a state which dictates who they are and directs who theybecome.
The laws that a state has set for individuals are normalizedandexpected tobe followed by the rest of the population. People typically think that a state is there for the people to grant them what they want because they have consented to it,but they do not question the state when it strips away their natural laws. This is mainly because people prefer stability and reassurance of their safety. Humans tend to create groups and followtheleadersbefore them. States have the power over people because of their freedomsacrifice in order for promised protection. By doingso, they give sovereign authority over themselveseven if they have to sacrifice the rights they already have. Since we have given states power they are capable of changing our way of thinking and what we believe in. By giving a sovereign authority for the peoples needs and wants, they have given them power over the population. Although in most cases this is through power relations that start to shape people’s way of thinking and make them believecertain ideas arealwaysright and must be done in a specific way.
From this, people start to think it isnatural for states to implement laws and that once its put in place there is no change. Instead, it is thought of something that must always be followed and obeyed. Power relations proves states have control over the people and their perspective through secure tactics with laws and punishments. Without the fear of punishment people wouldbreak laws all the time. However, if astate breaks natural laws or social order, it is notquestioned. Since states hold a lot of power they are seen as rulers with authority people are forced, by fear to keep the state functioning smoothly since it has the power to punish those who go against the rules that’s the state has set.
Humans by nature are afraid and often need a supreme ruler to give them what they think theyneed. Most people in society tend to give their consent for an exchange of protection. This formsa state which is founded on such principles that requires people’s obedience becauseit is theonly thing that will grants themsafety. Individuals provide active and tacit consent to be governed by the laws of the state. The state is not questioned for it’s actions, as it is initially in control of the society it has helped constrictthrough the trust of people.
