The Necessity Of "Open Borders" In America
The term ‘open borders’ may raise alarm when heard. Many people believe that it is allowing anyone and everyone into a country with no questions asked; however, this is not the case. Having open borders would mean that instead of limited amounts of people being allowed into our country, everyone who does not pose a threat to our society would be welcomed. This would not only improve our economy, but we would also display virtue in taking in the refugees fleeing drug wars or other problems in their home country. Opening our borders will be the solution to our immigration problem.
So many people are dying, just trying to escape the poverty and famine in their home country. In 2017, 412 men, women, and children died trying to find a better life, some after waiting for months to be granted permission. Open borders make this next to none. Instead of these innocent people dying on the journey, they should be allowed to come and become a citizen, get a job and contribute to their community. They deserve life, and they deserve a good one.
In 2016 alone, the United States has spent an estimated $3,801,000,000 on border control. Each year, we waste more and more money on murdering innocent people just searching for a better world. The resources we are spending on immigration enforcement could easily be spent on something more important such as the children in our country’s education, fixing our roads, and climbing America’s way out of our $21.6 trillion debt. With open borders enforced, it would help our economy. More people means we need more houses for them to live and more food for them to eat and more cars for them to drive. They would also be buying more luxurious items such as game systems, jewelry, and high-end clothes. The supply would have to go up along with the demand. This would ultimately create more jobs as businesses hire more people to produce more products faster.
Many people for restricted borders say that if we open our borders, we would be letting convicted murderers, terrorists, and possibly deadly illnesses into our country. This would be true if there were absolutely NO control. This is not was open borders are. After doing a background check and checking for diseases, this would nearly eradicate the possibility. They also claim that open borders would encourage immigrants to stay here forever. This is not the case. In the 1960s, 70 million Mexicans crossed the US-Mexico border when the immigration restrictions were not so heavy. Eventually, at least 85% went back home, but after we attempted to strengthen our border it discouraged them from going back.
Open borders would actually encourage them to return home because they don’t have to worry about not being able to get back in if needed. Another argument often used is that the immigrants are just trying to live off of the government. This is not true. In fact, it’s impossible for the first five years that they are here, unless they have children. With or without government assistance, only 4.1% of immigrants are unemployed with natives only at 3.9%.Opening our borders would improve the quality of life everywhere. We would have more jobs available, a better economy, and less immigrants would die trying to come to America. It’s not only the smart thing to do; it is the humane thing to do.
