The Reasons Why Cigarettes Are Still A Prevalent Part Of The Market

Although smoking cigarettes predictably brings on death, the act is not forbidden by society. There are several cancers found to be caused by smoking. People die daily from smoking diseases and these cancers. Despite the historical past of cigarettes and death rates, anyone in the United States over the age of 18 can buy and use tobacco products, such as cigarettes. The need to fill nicotine addiction and cope with emotions are some of the main reasons that cigarettes stay on store shelves. Another reason is because of tobacco’s role in the United States economy.

Smoking is “the inhalation of the smoke of burning tobacco encased in a cigarette, pipe, or cigar”. The United States is one of the leading producer of tobacco leaves with North Carolina being known for tobacco production and leading the industry. Tobacco predictably brings on death, increasing the likelihood of getting lung and other cancers. Cigarettes are not forbidden because millions of people smoke cigarettes and of those people most are addicted to nicotine. This means that millions people in the United States are addicted to nicotine. Smoking is an addiction that causes people to “need” nicotine. Taking nicotine away from over 30 million people who feel like they “need” it would cause an outright uproar in the United States, contributing to the reason why smoking cigarettes is not forbidden. The nicotine found in cigarettes helps relieve stress. Many Americans will say they feel stress sometimes or frequently during their day. Smoking cigarettes is an accessible and thought-free way to relieve stress, but it is a dangerous habit. Because of the ease and convenience people will continue to smoke cigarettes, despite the extreme harm they are causing themselves.

Billions of cigarettes are sold each year to United States consumers at varying price points depending on location within the U. S. State and federal governments get to impose a tax on the sale of tobacco. The state and federal governments benefit from the sale of tobacco. Cigarettes will continue to be sold, despite predictably bringing on death because it adds to the United States economy. In a way, companies that produce tobacco are so focused on making a profit/living that they have an egoistic theory type of attitude. They are focused on their individual success and not on the greater good of those that will be affected by their products. They do not have a utilitarianism view but instead a non-teleological view.

One may argue that if the United States really continued the sale of tobacco to help the economy, they would have forbidden the sale of electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes. While e-cigarettes have made a surge in the market, they have not overcome traditional cigarettes. There is also the chance that people who have never smoked before that begin to use e-cigarettes can develop an addiction to the routine of smoking and eventually start smoking cigarettes for that reason. E-cigarette introduction into the market is not hurting the overall United States economy because cigarettes are still a prevalent part of the market.

Smoking cigarettes predictably brings on death. The negative side effects of smoking overpower the “need” for nicotine and the emotional coping. What it comes down to is that the people who smoke or who sell cigarettes are worried about pleasing themselves or making a profit. Smoking cigarettes is not forbidden because smokers and producers are not focused on the foreseeable consequence of death that lingers in the shadows of their addiction and profit.
