The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living
In our modern, 21st-century world we live in a continuous automated routine; our society is in a constant state of being busy and overwhelmed. Thus, we never have the time to relax or have a break from the intense amounts of pressure that is consumed in our everyday activity. This way that our 21st-century society runs is immensely influenced by the fact that our civilisation is more time consumed, this is due to the extensive developments in the field of communications technology over the past century.
Due to these advancements, our society is constantly reliant on some form of technology and thus, we seem to experience an autopilot mode where we are “Not being present, or attentive, to our own lives. ”(Salinas, 2018, p. 1) With most of our society living in autopilot mode, we do not take the time to examine our lives and thus cannot see what is making their lives worth living. Therefore, we as a modern society are falling into the trap of everyday doings.
Without examining our own lives Socrates believed that we are not striving to come to know ourselves and to understand ourselves and therefore, our existence would have no meaning or value. This statement that Socrates made is true as the trap of not examining your life leads to people not seeing a purpose to their existence and they can become depressed as well as develop other life-threatening emotional disorders. Thus, the importance of living an examined life is crucial to see a purpose to your existence, as without purpose the pursuit of wisdom and truth which were seen as essential to being human and living from Socrates perspective is not accomplished.
Point 2- However, although we can examine our lives, we need to know what gives our lives meaning and makes our lives worth living to truly explore our existence. Socrates stated, “to understand what you are living for is more important than actually living. " So, what are we living for? Most people are living out of ambition to reach goals. When we are little we are taught to work hard so we can get the best job and the most money. health and time in childhood but in spite of enjoying that we start aiming for money. when we are young we have money and health but don’t have time to enjoy it. as we grow older we lose our health so in spite of having money and time we are not able to enjoy the life.
