The Use Of Technology In Accounting: Accounting Software

Technology has always been revolving and improving as time pass by. Many things were emerging because of it. Life has been easy and people rely more to it ever since it flourished. The continuous growth of technology is not only evident in the everyday lives of the people, but also to the accounting field, whether it is regarding education or in the practice of it. Through reading the two scientific journal articles with the title; “An Experiment To Assess The Learning Benefits Of Employing Accounting Software In The Classroom” by Brendan O'Connell, and “Accounting Software for Students – An Efficient Tool” by Raul Ressano Garcia, my perception about Accounting Software being the most effective tool in learning Accounting concepts change for it was said in the paper of O'Connell that “use of a commercial accounting package for educational purposes is not superior to traditional teaching approaches”.

As a first year college student who has been exposed to the Accountancy program for a semester and a half, I could probably agree to the experiment of O'Connell that traditional way of teaching is much more understandable and easier to process. Using technology add more to the things that needed to be studied and not everyone has the capability to really understand and excel in using it. However, based on the article that was written by Garcia, “the designed software is not only a very useful tool for accounting students, but also one that students can easily work with thus taking advantage from it” (p.003900), it was indeed true that using software and the technology does really help and make works much easier. So if I were to be questioned about whether to choose between traditional and the modern technological way of teaching Accounting, I would prefer the latter one. The hardship of learning the additional terms and knowledge about technology is nothing compared to the benefits that it has once you learn to use and apply it.

Since we are still a student and are still in the process of acquiring the basic knowledge about the profession that we will take in the future, I think that it is just right to start to use the traditional way of teaching. But as time pass by, once we got the basic knowledge and we were able to really master and apply it, the use of technology should already be used in equipping us, the students, the other skills that an Accountant should have. Because once we get out of the four walls of the classroom and practice what we have learned throughout this four-year program, technology would be prevalent and would become the medium to use in the workplace.

In the article of Brendan O'Connell saying that traditional approach is much superior than of the accounting software, it is evident that the way of teaching accounting is different when you are applying it. Because in the real-life accounting practice, the use of accounting software is the most effective way in doing the job. Computers do most of the Journal Entries. Microsoft excel became the most used software in computing. And, accounting technology played a big role in making the Accountant’s job easier and bearable. These are in consonance with the article written by Raul Ressano Garcia.

It was indeed prevalent that in our modern time today, technology had played a big part in our lives. It affects the very small thing up to the huge advancement of the society especially in the field of Accounting. Technology may be inferior to the traditional way of teaching accounting but it will always be superior when it comes to the workplace. It not only made the life of the people easier, but also the jobs of the Accountants.
