Three Types Of Nonverbal Communication

Nonverbal communication is of mainly following types:

  • Kinesics - body language: One mostly communicates through body language than any other nonverbal means. In fact, in a personal face to face communication, 80% of communication takes place through body language. (Tidwell, n.d.) This includes a number of ways through one send and receive some messages. Such as facial expressions (lift up face saying you are happy, gloomy faces make people look sad, raising eyebrows signifying questioning or suspecting or being fed up, etc.)
  • Eye expression (rolling up eyes implying fed up or tired or not interested, open up wide eyes conveys fear or surprise, etc. direct eye contact implies confidence, ignoring eye contact may resemble being ignorant or embarrassment or showing respect or lying etc.), posture (standing straight showing respect, attention, leaning towards someone showing friendliness, interest; etc.) (Tidwell, n.d.)
  • Paralanguage (body movements): How one moves his whole body or part of his body in relation to the whole body also communicates a number of things. (Segal, 2018) Such as moving here and there fast may show anxiety, stress, waiting, nervousness, keenness etc. waiving hand may show saying hi/goodbye, showing palm may ask for stopping, smiling represents friendliness. Happiness etc.
  • Proxemics - space language: How close one person is standing or sitting represents the kind of relationship between the persons communicating. For example, two friends will stand or sit in a most closed loop. T=one teacher and the student will stand from each other slight far away. The more the distance the more formal relationship is.
