But increased use can harm even the most resilient user. Their studies put tobacco use as a major preventable cause of death in the world, killing nearly 5 million people annually. The main culprit behind this mass addiction is Nicotine, it is a component that acts on the brain which can increase the levels of stress-relieving hormones such as dopamine, which doesn’t harm the user. They concluded that there are no safe threshold levels for the use of tobacco. This means tobacco smoke may cause harm even at low levels of exposure. However, these are just statistics with no real side effects listed.
First off, there are many side effects listed and informed about smoking or tobacco use by many organizations and health firms, such as The Australian Drug Foundation, who is an advocate for the banning of tobacco in public sectors. They have listed the many side effects many turning into long-term effects. One of the most dangerous effects listed is the most common with heavy to daily smokers which includes an increased risk of stroke and brain damage, laryngeal and pharyngeal cancer, heart disease, and a massive increase to susceptibility to infection. These effects worsen if the host is pregnant which could lead the unborn to be underdeveloped and possess major health risks in the future. But these facts don’t stop many smokers and activists in their beliefs.
The first argument many smokers, whether it be a long-term or short-term host, claim is that the act of banning smoking in public places is an infringement on freedom of choice and health. An effect of this was seen in Maryland in 2006 when the Maryland State Senate passed a bill that banned smoking in public places and few restaurants and bars. Statistics claim that there was an absence of customers by about 30 percent on weeknights and 50 percent on the weekends. This led to a huge backlash on the state senate with an arbitrary claim of the nullification of human rights. In fear of civil unrest, many policies on smoking, especially to private sectors are now mainly avoided by commissioners in all states. But that doesn’t blot out the truth.
Whatever happens, it still won’t affect existing bans in public places due to them being under control of the government. Almost all public areas, except a few parks and places, are now listed as a ‘no smoking’ area, and there are many scientific conclusions bracing that argument. In 2014, the researchers from Brigham’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Edinburgh conducted 11 studies conducted around the world that incorporated more than 2.5 million births and approximately 250,000 asthma-related hospital visits. They found that the overall impact on child health was very positive and the rates of both preterm birth and hospital admissions for asthma were reduced by 10% with areas that include laws that prohibited smoking in public places. This not only set up a pathway leading to the decline of smoking but also opened a door which cannot be closed, for people care for their younglings and will do many actions to keep them safe.
With regards to the banning of smoking, there are many alternative settings already in place which has contributed more to the cause of ending smoking and the addiction of tobacco products, Therapy and or social outreach. For Example, Truth Organization is one of the most popular and widespread outreach programs which specializes in reaching out to the developing age such as teens and young adults and informs about the many harmful effects of tobacco. In fact, a study done by the US National Library of Medicine has concluded and found that the campaign done by the Truth program has caused an overall decrease in popularity of tobacco among teens and younger. By performing a wave type outreach, the program saw a reduction of smokers by 3% every year from the age range of 15~25. As of now, they are trying to increase their targeted populous and expand farther. Other than revealing the truth about smoking and tobacco, the Truth Organization also aids in non-profit withdrawal programs in almost every city and or college.
In conclusion, smoking is a terrible manmade plague which haunts its host and those around him. From severe life-long scars to lethal and potent outcomes, tobacco brings ill health to those who fall prey to its effects. Though it may make one feel ecstatic, it’s only temporary. Its risk outweighs its benefits. Thus, it should be avoided at all cost. Even science can back up the ill use of tobacco. Tobacco causes more harm than good. Programs may exist to tell you about its demons, but the choice is yours between a chained and addicted life to being an open progressive member of society.
