Ways For Improving Employment
Improving employment in my opinion can be accomplished in some possible controversial but simple ways. In the following paragraphs I have determined through some research and my own opinion ways to improve the employment in America.
There is a huge strain in certain areas of our welfare system and if some requirements were added to the eligibility it would be beneficial to both the welfare system and the employment system. Passing a State lottery with the benefits of increasing employment by number of higher educated individuals in the labor pool. The government possibly stepping in to help companies in trouble by giving tax credits for not laying employees off would definitely help employment. By requiring welfare recipient job search, mandatory drug testing, and participation in a community service in the welfare system, Alabama passing a state lottery, and implementing a policy for companies to receive a tax credit for saving employee jobs are steps if implemented could have a positive impact to the employment of all.
First step is to make some changes to the welfare system. Welfare recipients should be actively searching for a job if physically and mentally able. If they do not stay actively searching for a job they would immediately lose their benefits. This would not only get more people into the workforce but would also take some strain off the welfare system. Just imagine the benefits to employment if the roughly 30 million Americans on welfare were actively searching for jobs. To stay eligible to receive welfare benefits all would have to agree to mandatory drug test. Drug testing would not only promote abstinence but it would also open up so many new potential employees. Employers would be encourage by the fact that these individuals were successfully participating in a sobriety program.
Benefit recipients would also have to perform some sort of community service. This would be beneficial not only to the individual but also for their potential employer. As the individual takes part in a community service they could be learning a trade. Examples of that could be carpentry by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, organizational skills while collecting items for the homeless, or perfecting verbal communication and teamwork while volunteering at a soup kitchen. One of the most effective ways I believe to improve employment in America is to have welfare benefactors to be actively searching for jobs, drug tested to receive, and participation in community service. If these steps were implemented in every state it would have a positive impact to all Americans. With 30 million Americans claiming welfare benefits imagine the increase of potential employees with newly acquired trade training and sobriety.
Second way to improve employment would be for Alabama to pass a state lottery. With the surrounding States positive educational lottery impacts Alabama is really missing out. There are so many Alabamians that are crossing state lines buying lottery tickets in other states that are benefiting their educational programs and its sad that we could be benefiting ours if we had a lottery here. In Georgia, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has paid more than $8 billion in lottery proceeds to fund 1.6 million HOPE Scholarships since its inception two decades ago. Florida contributed $1.24 billion in education just this past fiscal year. I believe if Alabama would pass a state lottery it would be beneficial to college-level institutions, vocational schools, and trade schools. A lottery with scholarship awards would make college a reality for individuals not otherwise able to afford college. What better way to improve employment than to improve education.
Third and final idea of improving employment not only in Alabama but the entire United States would be to implement an idea from Germany’s government. Germany gives tax credits to companies that shortens work hours per employees rather than lay them off. Example of their policy is if there is a company with 100 jobs needing to cut payroll by 10% instead of cutting employees jobs they would instead reduce their hours by 10% and the government would give them a tax credit for keeping their workforce intact. Instead of employees getting laid off during a company's hardship the employee is able to keep their job and the company receives a tax credit.
Exploring ways for improving employment no matter how far fetched it may seem could be beneficial to all employees and employers. From requiring welfare recipients to look for jobs, stay drug free, and volunteer to learn a trade, passing a state lottery, and giving a company a government tax credit to keep employees instead of laying them off are all really good ideas to improve employment. All the new employees from the new rules implemented to the once welfare benefactors with their newly acquired skills to the recent college graduates from a lottery sponsored scholarship the employment rate would definitely decrease. If all individuals could be more open minded and consider these possible ideas we all could benefit.
