What Intrigues Me About Ancient Civilizations

When talking about ancient civilizations there are a couple of things that intrigue me when talking about traditions or methods the people of this time used.

One of the first being dog collars used in ancient Greece. Dog collars during that era had spikes on them as well, ant it amazes me that a technique used back then still has the same use today. The spikes on the collars were there to protect the dogs' neck from attacks from other fierce animals. When I go hunting I also have protective collars that offer the dog more protection to the neck area that way whatever we are out hunting around in the wilderness cannot easily injure my hunting dog. This intrigues me because before learning this I had no idea that the certain collars I use, and their purpose derived from so long ago and is still the same technique, give or take a couple improvements, used today.

So far while learning about humanities and different topics within, it really interests me that certain traditions have been carried on throughout the ages. Today it seems difficult enough to even try and keep family traditions alive each year, it’s amazing that over time the traditions such as language, fashion, religion, and food have managed to be carried into today. Languages like Latin are still alive in the English language today and share the same meanings just like some of the same religions are alive today such as; Catholic, Islam, Judaism, and Muslim. When I was in high school we did not really get much time to go into details on the traditions from each religion. Being that I am Christian I have always paid more attention to those that are most like my own religion. So far, I have learned that th8ings like repenting for your sins, asking for forgiveness, and being baptized were all very much alive and similar back during the time of ancient civilization. One part of the Greek civilization that I wish carried into today more is the involvement of religion into schools. I think intertwining religion with normal school is very helpful for those who are strong believers. The study of religion was not only in private schools but public schools as well and being that when I was younger I attended a private Christian school I feel that it is very beneficial to students.

To me humanities is more than just history of humans and how they interact, it includes things like music, art, and culture of humans in general. Over time the cultural aspect of humans has evolved and changed so much. When looking back at older dates and an older era you notice that art was much more detailed and intricate. The paintings were all very detailed and seemed to have much more time devoted in making them, whereas now everything seems so simple and almost plain. I myself can appreciate a painting from a past time more than one from today because I can tell more time was spent on it and it just seems to have more depth to it. Ancient Greek civilization has brought the attention to tradition and detail to my eyes. Greek civilizations focused on close knit families and a sense of togetherness as well.

This is another thing that intrigues me about this civilization because this is a very important factor in my life as well. I did not grow up with a close-knit family like some of my friends may have, and I will not raise my kids this way. My kids will have a sense of togetherness and strong bonds with family. I can say that I enjoy engaging in the study of humans over time in this class more when I am finding things I can relate to such as the dog collars and religion in Greek Civilization.
