What Is It Like to Have English as a Second Language
Personally, I think English is one of the most spoken language in the world. In statistic, there are over 400 million people communicate in English as their first language and over 700 million people communicate in English as their second language in the world. I am native speker in Malaysia, this is my first “mother” language. That is why I found difficult to speak fluently in English and this has inspired me to write an essay about my language journey.
To continue, in many countries English language are the daily basis language that almost everything can be in English. For example, in Malaysia English almost every household in Malaysia use English as a second language. The English language is being use at School, University, Work place, and Public such as in commercial or social, formal or informal affairs.
In my point of view my English is really bad for people to understand especially in writing because I being use Malaysia language for so long that made my English not fluent and excellent. Sometimes I wish that my English is good as my parents and brother but all perfectness come from a lot of practice. However, I did not say that I don't know how to speak and write it just that I have biggest problem when using English that is lack of knowledge in vocabulary and grammar yet not only me have to face this kind of problem. For me, since I was kid I like to try speak in English as my mother tongue, speaking English make me look cool but because of how introverted I was a kid made me lack of confident to learn speak in English and every afraid to make mistake. However, even I was every introvert kid that not stop me to try speak in English.
Each person in this world has their own experience when use English through communicate as a beginner or the one that a native speaker in English language. Some of the experience that been through taught us how to speak in English.
I am a native speaker in Malaysia language. In my house, me and my family communicate in Malaysia language. I rarely speaking English because I more comfortable speak in Malaysia language while talking. Even I always speak in Malaysia language since I was kid my parents and brother still make me exposed with environment that use English language. Mostly my parents and brother make me been exposed with English environment through entertainment that make me watching, listening, reading, playing such as movies, animations, series drama, songs, magazines, comics, video games and so on. So, from that kind of environment I know existed of English language.
I start not being introvert when I was 9 years old. When I start having friends in school life. However, I still not have confident to speak in English while talking but sometime I try to when I having English class I try to speak with my teacher friends. No lies, if I never being judge and bully by others when I try to speak in English. But that how I learn to overcome my fear of making mistake. Sometimes I try to speak in English when It's not in English class but all the conversation end up in Malaysia language.
