The Concept of Proactivity and Its Role in Personal Development
As Eleanor Roosevelt said “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste the experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience. According to the author proactivity and reactivity is two basic habits of a highly effective person. A proactive person is one who recognizes his responsibilities and does not blame circumstances conditions for their behavior.
On the other hand, reactive people are often affected by their physical and social environment and blame others for their bad performance. Personally, I am not a good decision maker. I took much decision of my life to be as a reactive person. I would like to share the experience of my life when I used reactive response. In our society being a girl everyone expects so much from us. Our parents decide the future when we are little. They decide everything, For example, my elder brother and sister are a dentist and doctor respectively. So in result, my parents wanted to take the tradition ongoing and also decided me to become a nurse. My parents came to me and told that “ We are going to Nursing college for your enrollment” that time because I was under pressure of their expectation that's why I did not say a word and without explaining about mine carrier choice to join army instead of nursing, I went with them and gave reactive response. However, if I would have chosen to react as proactive and give them response by standing for my choice then might be the circumstances would be different and might be in my favor.
Secondly, before coming to Canada, I use to work as a nurse in a hospital. Moreover, I needed a job experience letter and reference for job purpose from the doctor. Instead of giving me those favor for ten thousand rupees. Moreover, my colleagues also told me that it is just ten thousand I should give to him and get over from the situation. As the reactive response, I gave bribe to doctor under the insistence of college and to fulfilled my needs. However, I came here to Canada at Bow Valley College and asked my teacher for reference through email. She replied, “Of course Harpreet any time”. As I think for the proactive response I might be fighting for my rights rather than to bribe him. So these are two experiences where I thought because of proactive responses circumstances might be different from now.
