What Makes My Room A Sanctuary

A sanctuary is a place of refuge or safety. For some, it may be a place of worship. For others, it may be their home. But for me, it is my room. If we are being technical, a room is a part or division of a building enclosed by walls, floor, and ceiling. Your room is the things you choose to occupy the space. Every since I was a little girl, I can remember spending a considerable amount of time in my room. It was were I felt the safest and most relaxed.

My room to me is a place containing all my emotional attachments, a place that helps me cope with my introverted ways, and where I am the utmost comfortable. As I walk into my room, I am instantly hit with the distinct smell of rain, sandalwood, and mahogany teakwood. I have always preferred these earthy, masculine, and musky scents. I look to my left and see one of my favorite visuals, shelves with some of my treasured memories. On one of the shelves I have little souvenirs I collect from every place I visit. I look at my little hand spun glass puffin and am reminded of the frigid cold air and bright blue waterfalls in Iceland. I look at my lucky gold irish coin and am taken back to the rolling green hills of Ireland. These little trinkets might not hold any significance to any other person, but to me they remind me of all the incredible places I’ve been able to experience with my amazing family.

Right across my shelves I can see my bulletin board. Over the years I’ve been able to fill my board with some of my favorite possessions. Things like concert tickets, movie stubs, plane tickets, and wedding photo booth pictures with my family. My bulletin board screams to me my most cherished memories. A few steps forward I am met with my little walk-in closet which holds all my clothing that I have an irrational emotional attachment to. My clothes make me happy and I hate to part with items that have been handed to me by someone special or I’ve bought as souvenirs. My clothing is meaningful to me as well as represents me as a person and for that reason makes it important to me. I walk out of my closet and am met with my queen sized bed. Its white fluffy comforter, cooling memory foam pad and fuzzy blanket make me feel like I’m laying on a cloud. My five pillows hug me and give me comfort. I am on top of the world. I am forever at peace in my humble abode. My room protects me from all my greatest fears out in the world. I am a classified introvert. I have always been a shy, reserved and self-absorbed individual.

My room provides me with the perfect hideaway. The quietness is refreshing with only the small hum of the fan. The coldness gives me contentment and provides coziness. The darkness relaxes my tired eyes. I find excessive amount of commotion and noise to be overwhelming and overstimulating. Social situations can be incredibly draining for me so my room gives me the perfect environment to be alone and recharge. The outside world is fast paced together with loud and makes me incredibly anxious. Dealing with anxiety can be incredibly difficult and prevents me from partaking in common activities. When I am in my room I am my true form and my mind is at ease. When I am alone with my thoughts I am able to explore my creativity. I enjoy spending my time doing makeup artistry and seeking out new ideas. I truly am my happiest being lonesome with no one telling what to and not to do. I thrive best in an environment where I am left alone with just my thoughts.

In my room I can look around and see all my valuable memories, I can cope with my introverted ways, and I can be my true self. It gives me a sense of stability and tranquility. Even though I am almost always alone, I am always content and entertained. In my room, I am a queen.
