Why Bmw Should Go Eco-Friendly
Abstract
This paper talks about the possible scenarios of ecological challenges and impact on BMW. This automobile sector deals with high rates of raw material consumption and pollution during the production process, added to which road vehicles are consistently targets of criticism because of their emissions, involvement in accidents, the causes of noise and so on. BMW understands its severity and has taken plenty of necessary measures towards sustainability. The environmental threat as any aspect of the natural environment that might negatively affect an organisation for running its operations, including the implication of those aspects. BMW currently are undertaking many steps to improve the environmental sustainability like using TwinPower turbo technology, using I3-S technology that automatically switches off the engine when not needed. These are very effective ways improve the environmental conditions by an automobile company. Electric vehicle the future of the automobile industry. Thinking of new innovative ideas to improve the design of electric vehicles can be very efficient in BMW group’s goal of environmental sustainability. To bring the idea into action a combined effort of the policy makers, shareholders, engineers of the company and end users, i. e. the customers are very much important and needed.
Research Context
BMW since 1973 has been working research and development projects to minimize the environmental impact of its products. Its manufacturing processes are designed for minimum resource consumption and environmental impact like the CO2 emissions of the automobiles, model by model some environmentally friendly strategies such as hydrogen cars which results in low CO2 emissions. Further development of the combustion engine technology, the construction of lightweight cars, hybrid drivetrains, and increased resource efficiency in the production processes.
BMW is aiming to contribute towards combating climate change by limiting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (mainly CO2 emissions) through the manufacture of efficient vehicles and implementation of effective production processes. The revolutionary part of BMW’s sustainability strategy was building the idea of e-mobility like BMW i family, which used Carbon Technology to reduce weight. The BMW Group plans to transfer the e-drive technology to its other core brand models. It is making use of combustion engines featuring the so-called TwinPower turbo technology. In 2007, BMW defined a goal for 2006–2012 of reducing the consumption of resources and emissions per vehicle by an average of 30 percent. This was over-achieved with a reduction of 35. 7 percent using the parameters of energy, water, process wastewater, waste for disposal, and solvent emissions. The new target for 2020 set by BMW is the reduced consumption per vehicle by 45 percent compared to 2006.
To improve energy efficiency, five strategic areas of actions have been identified: (i) integrated energy management system; (ii) continuous improvement of ongoing operations; (iii) planning, implementation of energy-efficient properties, plants, and technologies; (iv) implementation of renewable energy projects; and (v) raising awareness, training, and motivating managers and employees on energy and energy efficiency. The total CO2 emissions were reduced from 0. 94 tonne per vehicle produced in 2009 to 0. 68 tonne per vehicle produced in 2013. Compared to the base year of 2006, BMW reached a reduction of 35. 2 percent in 2013 (BMW, 2014). Environmentally-friendly vehicles: In the light of our responsibility for human health and the health of our natural environment, we use the latest technology to increase safety and reduce exhaust emissions, noise emissions, and fuel consumption. By optimizing the design of our products, we ensure that the environmental impact is minimized. In addition 11 to alternative drives, this includes services and the provision of infrastructures that go beyond the vehicle and which support sustainable mobility.
Recycling: To avoid waste, BMW developed and systematically implement solutions for the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Their goal is to further promote recycling-optimized product design and the use of secondary raw materials in order to reduce the total consumption of energy and resources from production and operation and to close material cycles.
Mobility for the future: Joint planning and cooperation with all areas of politics, society and administration enable the BMW Group to offer future perspectives in which mobility and environmental responsibility are not contradictory. For that reason, they are developing transport concepts and technologies with the ultimate goal of maintaining mobility without negatively impacting quality of life.
Involving suppliers: Due to their responsibility for the efficient use of resources and the preservation of ecosystems, they are committed to involving suppliers and service providers in their energy and environmental policy objectives, and to motivating and encouraging them accordingly. In terms of product environmental compatibility, their suppliers must comply with legal regulations and the BMW’s Sustainability Standard for the supplier network. In order to ensure process-environment compatibility, they expect a certified environmental management system from their suppliers in accordance with DIN ISO 14001 or a derived, recognized, and certified environmental management system for the production site.
The BMW i8 is supposed to combine the driving performance of the sports cars with the fuel consumption of a compact-class model. The plug-in hybrid system developed for the BMW i8 is designed to meet the highest specifications in terms of driving dynamics, efficiency, practical usefulness, and quality, with the target to underline the BMW Group’s pursuit for technological leadership in the field of drive system development. In the long term. The evolutionary part of the sustainability strategy is what the company is branding as ‘efficient dynamics’.
Research Questions
Electric vehicle is a good solution to reduce the CO-2 emissions. · Can BMW start an open source patents? What is Open source patents? Tesla has come up with a unique idea of open source tesla patents, making them accessible to anyone who wants to design and build electric vehicles. How would it really be beneficial? Should be started at all? How will it actually help BMW group deal with environmental sustainability issues?
Research Methods
Electric vehicle uses one or more electric motors. The electric vehicles have no tail pipe air pollutants at the place where they are operated. They generate less noise pollution than internal combustion engine vehicle whether at rest or in motion. BMW group can come with open source patents, which is unique idea in which it is made accessible to anyone to design an electric car, which will be fuel efficient and reduce the CO-2 emissions. This would help BMW to improve the performance of existing systems by attracting innovative minds. E-drive is something BMW already has undertaken but something like open patents will help get better, unique and sustainable ideas from anyone who has an experience to design an engine or looking for opportunities.
It can be implemented by conducting surveys in the company to check how employees would take this new idea. By conducting surveys among the customers to see their preference of using the electric vehicles and how aware they are of the environmental issues and how can they contribute to improve the condition? Contests can be held in universities having mechanical courses and asking students to design such engines and encouraging and attracting them towards the company’s goal of environmental sustainability. Some of these electric cars produce no zero emission.
Significance
As BMW group supports the environmental sustainability it is in the best interest of the stakeholders and investors that it is done in more innovative way keeping in mind the performance and reputation of the company. Something like Open patent will improve the branding thus attracting more efficient employees towards the company keeping in mind the goal of reduction in pollutants. The main focus of the research is addressed to the policy makers, managers, customers, and engineers working on engine mechanism. Though BMW group has taken means to reduce CO-2 emissions but also can find alternate solutions to improve the electric vehicle market and provide better and efficient electric car and attract the customers towards this product and make them aware of the environmental benefits of using such cars.
BMW group actively promotes fuel efficient cars, recycling and environmental free vehicles but something like electric cars are the future of automobile industry as costumers are getting more aware environmental issues these days and wishing to contribute in improving the environmental conditions. Attracting fresh minds of students to design the fuel efficient electric vehicle engines would encourage these minds towards innovative thinking and idea thereby improving the brand
