Why Boxing Should Be Banned As A Sport
Boxing is a simple sport that has existed for hundreds of years. The main objective of this disgusting and barbaric sport is to beat up your opponent until they lose consciousness or can’t stand anymore. This makes boxing the only sport whose main goal is to cause brain damage to your opponent. This would be a fun sport, however, said brain damage can be permanent and it can also be lethal. Approximately 500 people have died in boxing rings since 1884, when the Marquis of Queensberry Rules were introduced. Clearly the safety of the boxers isn’t the goal of these rules. Some may argue that all the people that are against boxing are just picking on it because it more closely resembles a fight, and other sports also kill people.
This is true, I would say, however, there was only ONE case of a person dying during an american football game, and it was Chuck Hughes. He died on October 24, 1971 while playing for the Detroit Lions, he suffered a fatal heart attack during the final minutes of a game versus the Chicago Bears at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Talking about football, it is an excellent sport that emphasizes on good sportsmanship. Meanwhile, boxing emphasizes on beating the last breath out of your opponent to achieve your ends. What kind of message do you think this sends the children? Most sports acknowledge their younger audience and try to send good messages to the young, naive, and impressionable children that enjoy such sports. Boxing, however, is having none of this. They glorify violence. This could be one of the causes for the growing bully problem.
Honestly, this glamorization of violence is just simply unacceptable and barbaric. Speaking of barbaric, boxing is nothing more than an organized physical assault. Which, in any other circumstances, would be illegal. In many ways, boxing resembles dueling. A sport that was once common, but is now banned. The fact that the participants are willing is completely obsolete when the death count is so high. Moreover, the main goal of boxing is to cause a “knockout” to your opponent. The downside to this, however, is that said knockout is usually achieved by HITTING YOUR OPPONENT IN THE HEAD UNTIL THEY LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS! This head bashing causes many unnecessary tears in nerves and tissues in your brain. These are thought to cause brain damage, and can lead to brain conditions such as parkinson’s disease and alzheimer's. This is supported by the fact that Heavyweight boxer, muhammad ali, had parkinson’s disease for most of his post-boxing life. Most contact sports have rules that you need to follow to avoid brain damage, and often, penalties are presented for breaking them. Boxing, however, promotes this!
As I said earlier, a knockout is the ultimate goal. But maybe you don’t care about the mental health of the boxers, or you believe that boxing could be a way to lift someone out of poverty. This is a common argument for the side of boxing, “Boxing is a way that people could lift themselves out of poverty. ” This, however, is untrue. When a boxer reaches the age of 18, their manager can take as much as 25% of their takings from a match. Keep in mind that these are the people who spent many years learning how to hit people until they are unconscious. Risking their life every time they fight, and their managers are cutting 25% of this money that supposedly “raises them out of poverty. ”By now I would think that most sane people reading this would agree that in the final analysis, boxing is the outdated sport of brutally beating up your opponent that has no place in modern society because of it’s barbaric nature that never helped anybody achieve anything. And thus, we should ban it.
