Combatting Discrimination in the Workplace: Effects and Solutions

Discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. . Majority of people will spend more time at their workplace. This is why the discrimination will give a big impact to interpersonal and indirectly a company will also be affected. There are several effects of discrimination which is mental health and physical that will be discussed in effects of discrimination essay.

Effect on mental health.

Discrimination will affect the mental of employees. This means, the employers must always notice the condition of employees and the employers need to ensure there was no discrimination in organization. If there was a discrimination in an organization, the employers must responsible and take this problem seriously. In addition, due to Covid-19 several workers may work from home and some of people may have a lot of problems when working from home such as they must take care of their children while working, domestic violence and more. This means, They not only have a personal problem but also a work problem, people have to face it one time during work from home. Therefore, it’s become more burden to employees who need to face discrimination while work from home. From that, it will affect their mental and may lead to depression, anxiety and more. Beside that, the employees itself may have a higher level of psychological distress and health- related problem if they have experiences in discrimination. This is show that discrimination at work is awful. Depression and anxiety disorders have a big influence in work productivity. When the productivity spirals of the employees decrease, it also may influence the team morale and engagement. Therefore, the employees may not be interested in resolving project issues or perform their duties well. 

Effect on physical

A healthy physical is crucial among employees. This is because it will ensure they perform their duties very well and also will encourage others around them. Thus, enhance the motivation in the workplace among employees . It will reduce fatigue and physical burnout .Apart from that we are also able to reduce absenteeism. However, if there was a discrimination it’s may cause unhealty physical towards employees because the effects are not limited to physical. For instance, discrimination can lead to smoking, heavy alcohol use, aches and pains, high blood pressure and an increase in cardiovascular illness. As we know discrimination can cause stress. Therefore, some people find the wrong way to release their stress which is smoking and heavy alcohol use. This activity is an easy way to release someone stress especially during covid-19 they cannot go out having exercise or travel and both of these activities may cause someone to get heart disease. Smoking can cause damage to the airways and air sacs of lungs and will cause chronic bronchitis and they may be difficult to breathe. Moreover, smoking also can increase someone's blood pressure. This shows smoking is very unhealthy and harmful to the body. However, heavy alcohol use is more dangerous since the impact of drinking is more complex. As a result of may well increase the risk of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and high blood pressure. As we can see both of these activities have the same effect which is to increase blood pressure. The reason is both of these activities are sharing similar behavioural and lifestyle patterns and if someone has these both activities at the same time he or she may get cardiovascular illness. 

Effect on the work environment.

Workplace environment is very important in determining employee performance, morale, and productivity. Discrimination is the reason the negative work environment happen . This may lead to diminished performance and low employee morale such as missed deadlines, a high number of mistakes , absenteeism increase and more. Moreover, The employee also may not focus on their work and exhibit counterproductive work behavior. This shows low employee morale may harm the company’s reputation. The reputation of the company is crucial to attract better people to work there. Therefore , the company needs to have a strong positive workplace environment. If there are better people who are attracted to work in the company it may give a positive impact towards the company which will easier achieve their goals when the employees perform their job well. For instance, employees successfully meet deadlines, sales every month increase and are able to build the brand via positive customer interactions.

In conclusion, Mental health of employees is very important because they are the one who are playing an important role to achieve company goals. Discrimination cause of someone changes their lifestyle drastically. They are unhealthy workers, it affects their career and the company. Also, leaders have an important role in showing the positive work environment that fosters awareness and worth of a diverse workplace.
