Workshop On Professional Ethics (WOPE) Dairy Writing

“There’s no such thing as business ethics; there’s just ethics. And ethics makes no concessions for the real or imagined necessities of making a profit” - Michael Josephson

Ethics is also known as moral philosophy, what we do, we make and the world we create through our choices. Ethical beliefs shape the way we live. Ethics isn’t just an exercise for philosopher or intellectuals. It is at the core of everyday life.We ask ethical questions whenever we think about how we should act. Being ethical is a part of what defines us as human beings. We are rational, thinking, choosing creatures. We all have the capacity to make conscious-although we often act out of habit or in line with the view of the crowd. We could all make conscious and conscientious ethical choices if we wanted to.

Ethical dilemmas differ on the situations. There was some situation in which we thought we did this work under the ethics but may be someone thought it is not ethical. For example :- Kiran Bedi case flying economy, In this case other party charged that she hosts full fare from the organizers who invited her to the function.kiran bedi said travelling economy is a choice despite entitlement is to ensure that savings remain with NGO. In this case, according to kiran bedi, she did ethical work .she donate the money in NGO but when we see the company prospective this is professionally unethical because there kiran bedi represent the company .this type of case comes under ethical dilemmas.

Our institute organized workshop on ethics where prominent speakers share their experience .Speakers like Mr. Samar Singh Sheikhawat and Shri Arvindam gave us numerous examples on real life case where we came to know that ethics play vitual role in changing our life style way of living and respect rules and regulations.

The first session of workshop on professional Ethics or what is Ethical or unethical was inaugurated by our director sir Dr. prabhat Pankaj and the inaugural session by Dr.prashant gupta. Firstly, prashant gupta sir gives some points on the “Relevance and importance of ethics” in our day to day life or our professional life also. Sir says ethics is plays a very important rolde in our life. Being an ethical is good for us.After that our director sir Dr. Prabhat pankaj told about ethics. What is ethics and how it is good or a bad, how ethics work in our life. It is good to be always follows the ethics or sometimes to break a rule is also good. Sir said that ethics is what is morally good or bad, wrong or right. Sometimes tell lie is also good because people believe on this. Sir explains the ethics on the basis of story, the story about the truth of lie.

The story is that “one day there were two men stood by a river which is outside the city. One man name is truth and another man name is lie. They were a twin’s brother. A lie challenged truth to a race, clamming that he could swim across the river faster than truth. Lie laid out the some rules to the challenge that they must remove their all cloths on the same count of 3, dive to the freezing cold water swim to the other side and back. Lie counted the 3, but when truth jump lie did not jump. As truth swam across the river, at that time, lie puts the truth cloths and walked back to the city dressed as truth. He proudly assembles to the city and pretending that he is truth .truth made it back to the coast, but his clothes were missing and that’s why he left nacked but only lie clothes to wear, he refuse to dress himself as lie, truth walked back to town nacked. People stared and gawk at nacked truth walked through city. He tries to explain what happened that he was infect truth. But because he was nacked and uncomfortable to look, people mocked and shunned him; refusing to believe him that he was really a truth or a lie. The people who live in city chose to believe to lie because he dressed appropriately and easier to look at him. From that until day, people have come to believe a lie rather than believe a nacked truth. With the help of this story, sir says that in modern society see the only truth which is comfortable to them. After this session, the mentors were allotted to all the session and after that there is a classroom session. Where our mentor is Dr.Anvay bhargava sir.

On the same day in classroom session our mentor Dr.Anvay bhargava sir told us about the professional ethics and gave us a brief introduction about the course outline and what is course is all about. How the arks distributed, what was weighted. Then there is a discussion on Ethical dilemma which some companies and manager has to face. Sir also said this ethical dilemma see in the small business, he gave some example also.

He gave his friend example, that one of his friend has a small company. In his company one employee want a leave for some days, the reason of the leave is that he wants to prepare a government job because according to him government job is easy to do and fixed times. The reason behind his leave application is not acceptable to the company owner he thoughts that this is professionally unethical that’s why he fired that employee. After that healthy discussion sir gives a group project. Under this project we make a 5-8 members group and select a case which comes under the ethical dilemmas. We can select any case but if we select that case which is not in the news then we have the permission for which we select a case.

Content of the session – professional ethics

What I learned in that Session is once in a lifetime of experience, amazing and an intellectual personality he was. He was himself an example of ethics, when he told that CMO to former Cmo of United Breweries, Because of some practice which he didn’t adhered to.He said that he wear a formal because he come in our college, if he did not wear a formal then it is unethical to him.Mr. Samar Singh Shekhawat said that nothing is right or wrong, we can’t say someone is hundred percent right or hundred percent wrong, it’s all depend on the individual personality. He told us about the combination of structure it means one being watched by someone, environment factors changes the personal behavior of individual, someone behavior pattern is different from the other person behavior in different situation. His main focus was on that one should try to be on the same page on the personal or professional behavior. One has to take tough decision when no one is absolutely fair to anyone. He said that “great power comes with great responsibilities”He said that if you are in good position in a company like CEO, manager etc… than you have to be much more responsible because if you misuse your power then it is not good for you or that employee who work under your guidance. He gave some example like:

  • McKinney, Rajat gupta case in which he is accused of leaking insider information of company.
  • Pizza Hut Scam, where staff shows imaginary outlets.
  • Reebok case, Surinder Singh Ray started parallel distribution system.
  • Elon Musk, Co-founder of tesla smoking Marijuana on a radio comedy podcast.
  • Mr. Colin Karpernick case, an American footballer bent down on his knees in the middle of a professional match against the racism and discrimination of African-Americans in America and then Nike sponsored him.
  • Zara case and their business model, where they have spotters who do research on latest fashion trends all around the world.
  • ICIC bank CEO, chanda kochhars scandal. He gave so many examples on the ethical dilemma. He said that he is a ethical person, he always says truth because of his that habit his wife said some time keep shut your mouth.

Because of his that habit he resign the United Breweries limited, he told his superior that what they did is unethical because of his soo many employee effect but his superior did not listen him that’s why he resign that company. He gave some day to day life example, which shows that how much we are ethical. He told that asked yourself that you are ethical or unethical. He rise question like when you are travelling in plane you have an economy first seat but you kept your bag in last seat, it is ethical that you captured other passenger seat.

The second question he asked that when you buy some product, the shopkeeper give you extra money, can you return this money or taken it. Think that it is ethical or unethical to taken the shopkeeper money. He said being ethical of everyone not characterized your ethical personality. He asked that when you go in a lift, you suddenly see a girl who runs towards the lift and you open the lift but the same condition happen but this time instead of girl a old lady/man comes but you don’t open the life, why? If you did it good but you don’t then why?

Being ethical shows you personality, character your upbringing. If someone is wrong either he is your friend or your family member said them that you are wrong and don’t stand behind him. He said that it is very easy to do wrong but hard to do right. He said the mahatma Gandhi quote that “if 1000 people tell lie, it is still lie, it never being a right.” There is always some consequence of decision you take, so take your decision which comes under ethics.

Content of session: concepts related to professional ethics

“Text book come to an end but knowledge can’t”

Veda=Knowledge Anta= Essence/End Therefore, Vendata means End of knowledge Sri. Aravindan sais that ethics have two dimension.he also said that human have the infinite potential of learning but animals have finite potential of learning.he said we are lucky that we our human, we have the ethics but animal don’t have ethics. After that he told about his school vendanta. When you gain a knowledge some things comew to an end which leads to better living. He rise some question like, why human race and other races are different? He answered that we humans can make choice and decide on the basis of something but other things don’t have their choice, see those who had not a choice but still they are happy what they have.he told about the four pillars or a laws of life-a. Freedom of choiceb. Joy of action by eliminating stressc. Relationship with the worldd. Achieve growth through contentment

  1. Freedom of choice: life give us many choice but with some dilemma that what to follow or what to not, one wrong choice is enough to devastate can affect our life, but atleast we have choice, we feel blessed for this.He also told about the amny people for explaining the choice and how decision can affect the life of people. He gave his own example that he want to go in Vedanta but his father wants that he become a engineer .he told that there is a stereotype thinking exist, in which if you have a good marks then you become a doctor/engineer, average marks-accountancy, below average-arts, poor-philosophy.but why ?Ethics also teach us to be honest with ourself, life will not be honest with us .Choice should be made aligned with individual nature.Animals have the same choice but human beings have different choice.
  2. Joy of action by eliminating stress: we use TGIF, but why we can’t say: TGIMits all about how you take your work.In many cases joy of action is not there and its results in falling prey to addiction. For example- csk wins you drink out of happiness Csk loose you drink-out of sorrow. We can not found joy of action from outside, it can be found in inside.
  3. If you are happy from inside then you really are happy otherwise you are addicted from such types of stuffs.Ethical is not makes a person, but happiness makes a ethical.if you thought you praying a lot and you become happy then it’s a myth because prayer is not being a human happy, the only happiness make a human. It might be possible that a ethical person is not a happy but a happy person is a ethical.
  4. Relationship with the world: relationship is not about to understand other it’s about to understand yourself. the biggest problem in any relationship is that they want to know about the other person. How one relates himself with all other things, people, siuation, needs, wants is how a person decided on being happy or not.
  5. Achieve growth through Contentment: he said that growth can be achievement of the contentment or discontentment. Life is a principal of causedand effect.it is a emotional state of satisfication maybe drawn from being at ease in ones situation, body and mind. Contentment is state of having accepted ones situation and is a more tentative form of happiness.
