A Career Path in Taking Care of Animals: Veterinary Practices

Pursuing a career in animal care has come back as an interest of mine after reading about the number of animals affected by the Australian wildfires in January 2020. Following paragraph on taking care of animals reveals my desire on studying veterinary practices. Studying zoology would be a huge benefit to me as it will help me get into the jobs that, I want to work towards in achieving.

Ever since I was young, I dreamed of working with animals and now I believe it is the time to pursue that dream. I am currently studying at Lisburn south eastern regional college completing a level 3 diploma in theatrical, special effects and hair and media makeup. Although my course has nothing to do with animals and I may not have the certain qualifications, I believe my eagerness, motivation and past experiences will make up for it. In senior high for my careers class during my GCSE year, I did a week of work experience at an animal farm. Working with the farm animals has helped me understand how much work and care goes into looking after the animals. During this week, it has also helped me develop my time management skills and being able to work under pressure. To me, the study of nature conservation interests me the most and my goal is to work towards becoming a nature conservation officer or a veterinary technician.

To me, working with animals is very rewarding and extremely important as it can improve the animal welfare around the world. Not many people realise that all animals have an important role in the ecosystem, including rats. Rats are known in the UK as dirty, vicious and spreaders of disease, but they do have a role that could save many lives such as, being trained up like dogs to sniff out explosives and detect people that have been submerged in destroyed establishments caused by natural disasters. In my spare time other than working towards finishing my current course. I take care of my dog and four rabbits. I am a rabbit breeder and every time my rabbit has her kits; each pregnancy is challenging and different.

I love the learning experience that is involved with caring for animals. I have noticed that taking care of animals can bring people closer and create a stronger bond. Over the past four years I have gained a large amount of people and communication skills from working in retail, volunteering in a care home, and volunteering in a contact centre for children and young people to spend time with their parents in a safer environment. During the time I was studying health and social care, I have been awarded a certificate in effective communication. Moreover, I believe having great communication and person skills are very crucial when working in animal care veterinary practices, as it effectively leads to better clinical outcomes and enhance pet owner satisfaction.
