Analysis Of The Flow Characteristics On My Experience
Flow is the state when a person completely gets involved in a particular activity with all of his/her focus and be unaware of all the surroundings. I have experienced this state of flow several times in my life. I remember the one from my school. I was in 7th class. For the environment day, my teacher gave one flower pot to each student in my class and told us to decorate it. She set a prize for the most beautiful decorated flower pot. I remember the day before the environment day. I did a lot of hard work on that day to decorate that flower pot. I got involved in decorating the pot so much that I did not even realize anything else at that day. Because I am not very good in decoration and art, that is why, I was just concentrating on that flower pot for the whole day. I was fully immersed in that activity that I even did not play for a second at that day.
Now, I will explain that how my experience of flow exemplifies the characteristics of flow:
Complete concentration on the task at hand: As I told before that I was completely concentrating on my task. Decoration involves concentration because I was working with different colors so if I did any tiny mistake it can ruin all the beauty of that pot. Moreover, I thought a lot while deciding the colors for the pot because I wanted to make that pot very attractive.
Time no longer seems to pass in ordinary way: At that day, the time passed so fast that I did not even realize when it went night from morning. I did not eat anything. My friends also came to me for playing but I did not play. Mostly, I felt bored during the afternoon every day but on that day, I did not feel bored for a second. It was totally unusual.
An activity has clear goal and immediate feedback: This activity has a clear goal. I wanted to decorate the most beautiful flower pot so that I can get the prize. Although I was not very good in this field but I wanted to learn something new. It can give me the confidence that we can achieve success in any field with the help of the hard work. Furthermore, I was going to get the feedback immediately. If the pot satisfied me it was going to be a success for me otherwise I will have to think in a different way to accomplish that task.
Flow accompanies a challenging activity that requires skill: It was a very challenging activity for me because I had never done this type of thing. Firstly, I was very nervous because I thought it is going to be very difficult for me. This task requires a skill of craft and painting. It was a very new thing for me so I did not have any experience. But I did hard work and believe on myself. I put my all efforts in the task. At the end, I achieved success and decorated a very attractive pot. I proved that I can achieve success in any activity without having a required skill.
