Analysis Of The Fox News And CNN’S Articles On Global Warming
Peter M. Cox, Chris Huntingford, and Mark S. Williamson are leading climate scientist who have come up with a new formula to show there is no risk from global warming, which was featured in a Fox News article. The scientist’s formula shows that the rise in temperature wouldonly be between 4 – 6. 1°F, which is less than the previously agreed on temperature, 2. 7 – 8°F.
This discovery proves global warming is not evident for the near future. Kerry A. Emmanuel, aprofessor and expert on hurricanes at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) believesdifferent. In CNN’s article Emmanuel states, “The best scientific info we have now is that the probabilities of these intense hurricanes – from the point of view of both wind and water – aregoing up in many places because of global warming”. A UN statement was also used in the CNN article saying, “Humans are burning fossil fuels – coal, oil, gas – at an alarming rate, puttingheat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. In this manner, we've raised global temperatures about 1degree Celsius since the Industrial Revolution”. The CNN articles author, John D. Sutter, tells us that hurricanes are not a new phenomenon, but hurricane Michael is the direct result of global warming because of its size. If this were the case, in the past hurricanes would have naturally been weaker, but in 1935 and1969 two hurricanes hit the U. S. with more lower atmospheric pressure resulting in them havinga more devastating effect than Michael.
Both articles had great amounts of data and research backing their claims, but I found the Fox News article was more factual. Maxim Lott, author of the Fox News article, says, “A 2013 study in the journal Nature Climate Change found that out of 117 climate predictions made in the1990's, three were roughly accurate and 114 overestimated warming, ” proving scientist whobelieve strongly in global warming are not always right. This being said, the CNN articles use ofa logical fallacy gave the Fox News article the upper hand. I am sure global warming had a slight effect on the hurricane, but as the new formula used in the study shows, global warming wouldnot be a major factor.
I don’t believe there is any scientific research to be done as the three scientists have comeup with a new formula to show how climate change will have to major effect. The only thing thatcan be done to prove both sides is give the study time. As time goes, on both sides of this worldwide argument will be collecting data and evidence either showing global warming taking effector it not taking effect. Sometime in the near future I presume one side will prove the other wrong and finally end this debate.
