Analysis Of The Results Of A Student’S Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test

By applying the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) self-examination, one can gain a greater understanding of himself as well as the other people around him. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a personality self-assessment questionnaire based on a theory of four preference pairs that integrate into 16 personality types devised from the psychological research of a Swiss psychologist, Carl Jung. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the results of a student’s Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test and to help explain and understand the differences of one’s personalities in everyday life.

Carl Jung put forward for consideration the four dichotomies of personality traits: introversion vs. extroversion, sensing vs. intuition, thinking vs. feeling, and judging vs. perceiving (Hirsh). As one can see, each of these dichotomies contain two opposing preference possibilities that contribute to one’s everyday behaviors and/or personality type. Deriving from the four pairs of opposing preferences, each personality type is represented by four different letters.

My individual Myers-Briggs personality type is Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Perceiving -INFP. Before taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test, I analyzed each of the dichotomies and predicted what my results would be with a self-assessment. After taking the MBTI test, I confirmed that my test results identically matched my own self-assessment. My initial reaction to my personality score was expected, uplifting, and completely positive. The letters INFP were the strongest Smith 2 concluding preferences from the personality test, and I have to admit that I agree with all of them. According to my MBTI results, I show a slight belonging to the group of introvert people.

My first preference received a score of 12 suggesting that I portray very few extrovert tendencies with a slight proclivity toward introversion (I). Before this assessment, I would never have thought of myself as an introvert, but this assignment has educated me in knowing I am definitely every aspect of one. This preference indicates how an individual directs and puts out energy. For example, I like to think before I act, even thinking so deeply to the point of not even acting. I currently work in a busy, high-paced environment where I often find myself wanting to connect to the task and not so much to the people. I have a tendency to disappear into my sanctuary in order to recharge my batteries. This isolating of myself from all of the commotion in the world around me for a night or two can energize me into the next week.

The next preference of my assessment personality is intuition (N), which received a score of 15. This result is quite consistent with my feelings and shows I have a slight preference of intuition over sensing. I enjoy learning new skills and solving new, complex problems in life rather than sticking to something I already know. Sometimes I find that learning is occasionally hindered when large amounts of information lacking substantial theoretical connections are delivered at a vast pace. I feel as if these new adventures grant me a competitive nature toward the goals I pursue eternally. To me, change is the new everything. Whenever I arrive at a new era in my life, I feel as if something has to change to get me to where I need to be.

The third preference from the personality examination represents feeling (F), holding a score of 15. This concludes that I have a moderate preference of feeling over thinking. This trait represents the way many of us make decisions in our lives. While making decisions, I tend to think of others who are involved in the situation before including myself in the equation. Sometimes this trait can be a burden in my life because I focus so much on making others happy for my own satisfaction that I forget about myself and my needs.

The final aspect of my personality preference is Perceiving (P) with a score of 15. This preference represents the ways you approach the outside world, often known as a lifestyle preference. Perceiving people are generally curious individuals who live their life spontaneously and approach the world with flexibility. I can confidently say I follow suit with this lifestyle as I love change, even when it comes to last-minute changes. I have grown into a very adaptable person probably due to accepting so much change without hesitation throughout my life.

Ever since I obtained my results from the MBTI test in class, I have not been able to keep them off my mind. Studying the 16 personality types has been the most interesting topic by far I’ve studied in business. It is quite appalling to learn the perception of oneself is constantly changing. As an INFP, I am an idealist and a perfectionist. Consequently, I am frequently very hard on myself, and at times I seem to refrain from giving myself enough credit. In my quest to achieve the goals I have identified for myself, I tend to be very demanding of myself. When something captures my imagination, I go all in, dedicating Smith 4 my time, energy, thoughts and emotions to whatever the project may be. Although I may show my introversion by seeming reserved in expressing emotion at times, I am very sincere. I am always interested in understanding people and often play as the mediator in the midst of my friendships. INFP’s have a very deep well of caring and the ability to see the good in almost everything.

My personal values are so important that it is essential that my beliefs and my actions stay totally in sync at all times. Several characteristics of being an INFP include believing that personality types could potentially create so many doors for the workforce if the correct techniques were applied.

The overall analysis of the MBTI results is that a personality type can help determine and direct career decisions, education decisions, and also social decisions. Individuals should consider participating in this self-exam as it shows how unique personalities relate to the rest of the 16 stereotypes. By matching career and leadership positions based on research and statistical data, individuals can pursue career enjoyment and interpret what makes a good leader. These benefits will help in reaching success and happiness.
