Work as an Indicator of the Effectiveness of Internship Performance

Supplying the quality health needs of Indian citizens in rural areas have been an extreme challenge for them to survive. For this reason, medical students/interns that were assigned in that area should increase their patience and compassion along with professional attitude in providing medical assistance to the patients. Corresponding to the findings of Gaikwad, the present study revealed a slightly unfavorable attitude of medical students toward working in rural areas. Factors that possibly cause such unfavorable findings were due to insufficiency of hospital infrastructure, lack of education for children, less job fulfillment, imperfect residential address, poor relatedness with cities. One indicator to determine the students’ effectiveness of internship performance was his/her attitude. This will uncover interns’ reactions and responses to possible cases.

Interns’ attitude may also vary with work situations. Internship includes reaching out with other co-interns, thus creating new relationships. Getting to know new people provides better assessment of ones’ self, it may be personally or professionally both can benefit an individual. By way of mentors’ supervision, direction, and recommendations, interns will be able to enhance their attitude and behaviors for future achievements. Clearly, success can be obtained when an intern gets to learn from other’s mistakes. Corroborating studies from Chen et. al (2011) viewpoint that students in Taiwan concluded that learning experience and efforts were essential factors to satisfactory internship performance. It has proven by previous studies that there is a significant relationship between an employee’s attitude towards work and employee’s performance.

Work attitudes are assessment of an employee’s job performance that considers one’s own feelings, principles and commitment to one’s duty. It enables employers to predict the performance of an employee by means of expressing behavioral importance while working. Establishing expectations from employees and devising attitude & behavior can assess the management’s and employee’s performance. An added aspect that also affects the attitude and behavior of an employee is the leader’s character. Being the leader of a group means being the voice of the organization; it is the leader’s duty to instruct and assist the organization’s employees. Therefore, employee’s attitude towards work should be regarded as an influencing feature of peculiarities in workstation. Attitude of the employees vary along with several dimensions, these are psychological matters, job characteristics, employee-environment fit, one’s own personality, job relationship and market stress. Commonly, the human resource management takes full attention to work situations that may influence employees’ attitude towards work. It is the HR’s responsibility to influence all employees through management training & practices and organizational programs.

Building a healthy relationship with the company’s supervisor and workmates by displaying upright work ethics and a positive attitude may help sustain every organizations. Similar with businesses, reports from different companies have shown that employers would prefer employing interns with pleasant manners and enthusiasm with good technical skills. An employee feels pleasurable when he is satisfied with his work leading to appraisal of work experience. The happier the employee, the more job satisfaction. The assumption here is that dedication towards work and rendering positive attitude maximizes job satisfaction which develops overall performance of an employee.

Interns’ attitude towards work represents their reaction on things they like or dislike. Students behave according to how they feel being inside the workplace, whether they surrender on challenges or if they can handle the stress. Hence, interns’ and employees’ behavior vary on their own understanding towards work attitude. A research conducted by Rotenberry & Moberg (2007) found that employees’ strong dedication on work results to good performance than employees whose attitude towards work is bad. To put it simply, an employee with good attitude on work will result to greater performance.
