Autonomy, Mastery, And Purpose: What We Really Want From Our Work

The RSA film identifies that autonomy, mastery, and purpose are the three essential ingredients for balancing a fulfilling work and home life. Autonomy is the desire to be self-directed, management good for compliance, engagement what people want is good self-direction; interacting one day of autonomy brings about a lot of great ideas. Mastery is what urges people to get better at things and perfect their skills. People act in ways that are irrationally and doing things that are fun. Highly skilled people from around the world who are simply volunteers, give what they create away rather than sale it and people may wonder why. Take for example Wikipedia, it is run by technically sophisticated highly skilled people who have jobs, during their free time doing free work because they enjoy the challenge and mastery and making a contribution. The purpose is the motivator common work, better talent, profit becomes unmoored bad things happen. If managers and CEOs show compassion and for their employees and treat them like people, not animals work lives become better and increase performance.

The idea of self-recognition leads to better performance contrary to this RSA contends that larger rewards lead to poor performance. Once above basic cognitive skill rewards do not work to increase performance. A study was done by taking individuals and placing them in positions with Larger rewards, the result is that their performance lowered. This was even true in Poor countries where people needed the incentive with purpose than rich and miserable. These three key components follow a self-actualization model that a person’s potential to grow and do their best and understand that each person has individual needs to bring out the potential in their company.

In this film, it is concluded that money is not the top motivator for people. a higher wage is not a motivator for individuals to do the best they can, but to invite people to compete against one another to reach the higher level in a hierarchy, it does not necessarily mean that the person with the highest skill has the highest odds to succeed. Competition doesn't benefit cognitive work, collaboration does. The RSA film supports the theory that you will be successful doing what you love to do. Management of organizational behavior research supports the idea that we need both profit and a purpose. Profit is the price of getting people to work. People would rather live poor and with purpose than rich and worthless.
