Characteristics Of The Successful Leader Based On The Prince Of Machiavelli

Aims of doing this paper for analyzing who is the successful leader, who can be a great leader? A number of authors define successful leader very simply and narrowly, for instance: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” (maxweil 2017). According to Machiavelli 'No one is actually born a perfect leader' (ANON 2017). His paper explains that which is better fear or love for prince mechanism in authority. Some of the other definitions say that everyone can be a leader, but only a select few can be a great leader. Likewise Machiavelli explains in 'The Prince' that good leadership is when power generates actions and outcomes that the leader expected In comparison, there are princes who are unable to rule 'because they have no armies that may be friendly and loyal to them' (Machiavelli, 1985). This example shows that leadership is more than simply adhering to a prescription of a formal role. Finally talked about the characteristics of the successful leader, we have so many characteristic of great leader like: Honesty, Delegating, communication, sense of humor, Trust, Commitment, Positive attitude, Creativity, Capacity to inspire and intuition.
Characteristics of the Successful Leader
Everyone can be a leader, but only a select few can be a great leader. Machiavelli says in his book that the Prince's main criterion is to be excellent personality. The leadership of the present day is focused on a personality role. It is also perceived in terms of leader's position and ability to perform effectively from others. Leadership is correlated with inspiration, social behavior and interaction mechanism. 'Especially a prince must make arrangements to give himself the fame of a great man and an excellent judgment in every action. A prince is also appreciated when he is a true friend and a true enemy that is when, without hesitation; he comes out in favor of each other' (Machiavelli, 1985). Leadership may also be based on the leadership's personal qualities, or charisma, and the way authority is exercised. This leadership view raises the issue of 'born' or 'natural' leaders. No one is actually born a perfect leader. An individual may be inclined to lead other skills, but by life experience and training, leadership skills are naturally established. On the other hand, leadership often focuses on the leader's role in communicating with followers and following a particular leadership style. Machiavelli shares the same view that all princes are not leaders: 'Like all other things of nature that are born and grow fast, they cannot have their roots and connections, so that they are extinguished by the first adverse conditions' (Machiavelli, 1984).
Which is better feared than loved? According to Machiavelli in his book 'the prince' “One would like to be both the one and the other; but because it is difficult to combine them, it is far better to be feared than loved if you cannot be both” Men do not love consistently because of human nature and only in their self-interest. They're always motivated by fear, though. But if a prince has to use fear rather than passion, he has to stop being despised at all costs. He will stop hate if: He doesn't take their properties and their women from his subjects, He deserves his executions (Machiavelli, 1514). Machiavelli explains in 'The Prince' that good leadership is when power generates actions and outcomes that the leader expected. In comparison, there are princes who are unable to rule 'because they have no armies that may be friendly and loyal to them' (Machiavelli, 1984). As well as Mandela said that: “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership. ” (Mandela n. d) This example shows that leadership is more than simply adhering to a prescription of a formal role. It is more than eliciting mechanical behavior that results in a hierarchical structure from a superior subordinate relationship. Effective leadership implies positive organizational actions as well as achieving team goals. Today, a leader can be imposed, formally appointed or elected, selected informally, or emerge naturally through the group's situation demands or wishes. Five centuries ago, this was unlikely, but some rulers were selected informally. Leaders should be able to solve difficult tasks with extensive expertise. It must be possible for good leaders to deal with dynamic changes. Machiavelli used the definition of hate to explain this: 'Because Princes cannot escape being hated by some, they should first strive not to be hated by a class; failing that, they must do their utmost to escape the contempt of that stronger class' (Machiavelli, 1984). A Machiavellian leader's characteristics, a good Machiavellian leader is made up of five key features and functions. Such traits are the factors that affect whether or not the leaders are going to succeed. Such features need to be feared or loved but not hated with the support of the people, convincingly demonstrating values, using one's own weapons, and intellect. A leader has no hope of becoming a successful Machiavellian leader without these five qualities (shooner 2016).
The Characteristics of a Good Leader Based on our study, we find that these main leadership characteristics are consistently held by great leaders: Honesty, Delegating, Communication, and Sense of humor, Trust, Commitment, Positive attitude, Creativity, Capacity to inspire and intuition. Although not all of these character traits have been demonstrated by many powerful and successful leaders, and the definition of a good leader can be quite unclear, at least some of these qualities are leveraged by most good leaders. 'Nothing brings a prince more prestige than great campaigns and striking demonstration of his personal abilities. A prince should Show his esteem for talent, actively encouraging able men and, honoring those who excel in their profession. As will as this, at suitable times of the year he should entertain the people with shows and festivities'(Machiavelli, 1984). As long as the prince does not rob the great majority of their property or their honor he then only has to contend with the ambition of the few. He will be despised if he has a reputation for being fickle frivolous effeminate, disorderly, or irresolute; a prince should avoid this like the plague. The prince who succeeds in being thus regarded is highly esteemed; and against a man who is highly esteemed conspiracy is difficult. ' The people expect their leaders to be: ' grand Courageous Sober and strong'(Ibid).
Many essential characteristics of a good leader have also been found in our research. According to the Deloite Touche (2014). Human Capital Report from, leaders of the 21st Century need to be able to build cross-functional teams, manage diversity across the board, drive innovation, set direction and develop successful teams, Being a top performer at work requires yourself to master these traits. Here are five key features that leaders need to possess to achieve these goals and improve their career. Strategic Thinker:- Strategic thinkers are doing more than setting goals; they are leading the way to achieve their goals. They think critically, break priorities into actionable measures and then execute a strategy. We understand the greater forces at work and set overall goals. They can anticipate what will be needed when they see the world as a puzzle of moving parts. They must possess strong critical thinking skills, as well as the ability to take in and analyze large amounts of data. Recognizing their own limitations, they effectively engage other team members to accomplish goals (anon 2014)
Collaborator: - The model of the top-down order is out and there is cooperation. Within lateral networks, administrators run. In order to synthesize opinions, advance goals and reach solutions, we can define this age as one of sharing information. It's difficult for everyone to learn everything in our complex world. It is important to be able to draw colleagues ' perspectives and experiences together. It also means working comfortably in lateral networks that appreciate the value of different talent types and contribute to the whole expertise. Collaborators are active communicators and sharers. They are playing well with others and not creating unnecessary friction. They know how to work as part of a team, Recognize that they don't know everything and that their peers contribute to the different levels of expertise. System Thinker: - It is essential to connect and be able to think in terms of inter-relationships. Managers need to recognize how different departments throughout the organization influence each other. It requires the ability to see the potential impact within a system of multiple forces at play. In today's corporate culture worldwide, Systems thinkers are taking off the blinders and realizing that there is more than one way to achieve an objective or do things. System thinkers examine the underlying structure responsible for creating a scenario when it comes to implementing change. They identify each part's value as both an independent entity and a part of a system. (Stokes n. d).
Comfort with Ambiguity:- In a world where things are rarely black and white, especially when working with competing expectations, interests and needs within a multi-cultural workforce, it is important to be comfortable with some degree of uncertainty. There will probably be a diversity of views, opposing viewpoints and perspectives that need to be managed in a harmonious manner. It is important for leaders to be comfortable with confrontation and not to have everything solved. To order to recognize the needs of different contexts, it includes approaching people and situations from a position of neutrality. Ambiguity recognizes that the same response is not expected in all circumstances. Leading Change: - Change is the only constant in today's technology-driven world that affects businesses at all levels. Leaders of today need to be able to quickly adapt and pivot. Switching tactics requires the ability to make quick and wise decisions, like the recent massive layoffs by Microsoft. Leaders must be able to see the big picture and be able to keep the organization on track to achieve its dream. To progress the company, they need to be able to make the hard unpopular decisions. They're skating to where the puck isn't going at the moment. With the rapid progress of technology, resilience is key to bringing about change. This requires flexibility, Open and protects the decision making process of one's own (Ibid).
