Classifications Of The Mental Health Problems

Now that a variety of perspectives of mental health have been considered, it is time to think about some more specific ‘conditions’ and how these are classified. However, the most important point to remember is that a condition can lead to labelling and hence to an individual being depersonalised and viewed for example as a ‘schizophrenic’ or a ‘depressive’ instead of being viewed as a person.

Although there are positive aspects of a diagnostic label which can lead to the individual receiving appropriate care and support, the individual may also be expected to behave in a certain fashion, expected, in other words, to act in stereotype. Whilst it is important to have an understanding of some of the main features of some mental health problems, remember the different perspectives already considered and how these affect the outcome for the individual.

There are 10 different types of personality disorders:

  • Schizoid Personality Disorder is someone who may not feel the need in having a close relationship or bond with people including family and instead prefer being alone.
