Discovery of Archimedes of Syracuse: Pi
The topic I chose to write about is Pi, I chose this topic to do an essay about because I haven’t really taken the time to learn and to do research on Pi and because I want to learn more about it. Pi is a mathematical constant that is defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference. Egyptians used Pi to calculate the areas of circles to build things and to learn. Pi has been around for hundreds of years about 400 to be exact.
Archimedes of Syracuse one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world was the one who discovered PI. The Egyptians used Pi to calculate the area of a circle way long back. Archimedes calculated and approximated the area of a circle using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the areas of two regular polygons. You can measure two things: the distance around the perimeter of the circle which is the (circumference) and the distance across the widest part of the circle (diameter). The Pythagorean Theorem is a type of geometry among the three sides of a right triangle the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Mathematicians began using the Greek letter π in the 1700s which is how pi got its symbol.
Archimedes of Syracuse was a really smart mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer in ancient Greece. Archimedes was born at Syracuse, in Sicily, also known as the seaport city, in c. 287 BC. We don’t know much about him but we do know that he founded and discovered Pi to solve geometry and then he taught the Egyptians so they could build things and use it to learn which later got used to help make and use technology.
If Pi wasn’t invented it would affect my family and me because there wouldn’t be another solution for geometry and maybe we would have to learn even harder math to solve geometry and a lot of other hard math things that we would have to learn in the future. If Pi wasn’t discovered then maybe it would be harder for me to learn even harder math when I am older and it might be harder for me to learn it.
In conclusion, we now know that Archimedes of Syracuse discovered Pi and now we use it for years and years to come. Everyone would probably be affected if Pi wasn’t discovered or found. Pi is important for us to learn and get better at things.
