Driving With A Parent: Good Or Bad Experience

One of the best moments in a teenagers life is learning to drive. When we learn how to drive we feel like we are at peace and have freedom, we no longer need to rely on other to take us places. It’s like initiation into adulthood. But learning how to drive with a parent is something totally different. On January of 2015, I’ve decided to get my learner permit for my birthday. I studied and studied. When it was time to take the test, for some reason I keep putting the wrong answers. I didn't pass the first time so I went back 2 week later and passed. It was then time to learn how to start driving.

Once I had my permit I wanted to learn how to drive and everytime I ask I got back “Not today, maybe tomorrow”. I was so mad cause I had my permit for over 2 months now and still haven’t gotten behind a steering wheel. It was finally the day I was able to get behind the wheel even though all I was able to go was from my house to the front of my neighbor then back in the passenger seat. Learning to drive with a parent is very complicated. Everything you do your parent is screaming at you. Anything you do is wrong. I finally got the hang of driving and I was able to take it to the road. I drove from my house to my grandparents’ house and the entire time I was driving my mother was yelling. She screams “You are going too fast and you’re too close to the curb”. I felt like turning her voice down as if it was a tv until we got to our destination cause 25 minutes in the car and her screaming was very nerve wracking. I then told her “Mom can you quit screaming and yelling cause all your doing is distracting me, then we gonna end up on the side on the road in a ditch”.

A year went by and I have gotten a lot better driving and I wanted to get my license for my 16th birthday. I asked my mother and she said no you need some more practice. I was made but, the summer went by and now its August. I told my mother I need to get my license before school start back and she said ok.

It was the night before my drivers test and I was nervous, I had felt as if I was going to fail my driver’s test. I went to sleep and I had a dream that I took my test and the instructor was acting just like my mom screaming and yelling. After the test she told me I had passed, when I woke up I was feeling good cause I felt that I was gonna pass because of my dream. We left the house and pulled up to the DMV and I was very nervous. I went inside and took my picture and it was very ugly. The instructor came around and said pull the car around to the back. I pulled it around and when she got inside the car I felt more nervous. We proceeded with the test and she said “back up the car slowly”. I backed up and I noticed she had written down something that made me extra anxious. She then told me before we proceed to the road I have to know how to park a car. We began parking the car and I did great until it was time for parallel parking. Once she said parallel I started and I hit a cone and noticed she wrote down again on the paper she said try again, and I did better.

Once we were on the road I was move 10 miles under the speed limit cause I didn’t want any point taken off for speeding. She then said go to 60 mph, I did then she said stop immediately I stepped on the brakes so quick. She keep telling me to speed up and slow down. We pulled back into the DMV parking lot and as soon as I parked the car she said I passed. I was so happy, but she said that I only go point taken off for not putting on my signals when I back up and for hitting the cone when I was parking. After I got back with my mother I asked if I can drive home she said “no because you having your license doesn't mean you can do what you want”.

My mom finally let me drive by myself 2 months after I had my license. And to this day 2 years later after I had my license every time I get in the car with my mother she still screams and yell.
